Going to look at a 50cc moped, anything to look out for?

Isn't there a classic YouTube video or picture thread on here with a cheapo-chinese scooter in a bad way?

Bicycle, tbh.

Up-front cash of around £300 will get you a nice, comfortable bike, and you won't have to insure it, service it (errrr... sort of) or have a license to ride it.

Plus you get fit (or rather, your sister will) anddon't look like a complete idiot. :)

Yeah I think thats the one. We were looking at them and it was just less hassle to buy one out the paper as nowhere we looked had them in stock until august.

Look around on an auction site/local gumtree? Might be able to find a none chinese one for roughly same price, after my gf's brother has had one, I wouldn't advise anyone that way, in 10 months and about 800 miles he's had to have a new battery, new belt, few other bits and bobs done, they really are poorly produced mass produced items, spent a bit more in the first place to save a lot of long term heartache/purse-ache.

Make sure she wears protective gearing. People might not think they need it only doing 30. But a crash and a slide along the ground will still mess you up.
A bloke wife on my other forum had to have plates & screws put in her leg after only about a 30mph crash
Was wearing full gear including legging..

She has a pretty bad break in her left leg just below the knee (probably where the SUV front fender hit first). It is a multi-bone break that impacts the joint and it will need surgery with plates and screws to repair. They wanted to do the surgery on Friday, but the knee was too swollen. Other than that, she does not even have a scratch - full gear worked pretty well. I'd estimate about a 30 MPH get off.

I would avoid Chinese scooters unless you know what you're doing with spanners and are prepared to fix stuff. Here are the reasons why.

Sub standard quality parts that break
Most dealers refuse to work on them
They are hard to insure as they aren't on the normal vehicle lists
They rot awfully in British weather

To prove the insurance one, try and get a quote for her from any of the major insurers. I bet they wont cover it or will want silly money. This is the problem we had when I bought my wife a Chinese 125cc bike. It's a good little machine but my god, it's made of chocolate.
