Afternoon guys,

Prep - Flights, AirBnB booked. Money purchased (what a terrible time to do this trip if you live in the UK!) Have also booked tickets for the basketball. Staying in Brooklyn.
Length - Land Sat 29th at 11am fly back on the 5th
Budget roughly $700 for things to see and do over the week (can go over but this is a ballpark figure id like to stick to)
Goal/Interests - See and do as much as possible. Central Park, Top of the Rock, Grand Central, Times Square, Basketball, 9/11 memorial, Statue of Liverty. Are the things on my list currently, what else should we do? Food will obviously be a big part of this trip! Cheesecake, pizza and hot dogs all on the agenda. Any cool local places to go that wont be rammed or some fantastic places that stand out?
Will be going out on the Sat night (29th) as it is Halloween weekend and would like to go to a bar with a good vibe that we can soak up. Manhattan or Brooklyn/The Bronx what ever people can recommend!
Any questions do let me know. This is very last minute but cant wait.

Shamelessly copied from my post on Reddit. Anyone got any info on NYC that would be useful?

Thanks!

Statue of liberty was rather underwhelming for me and it took a good chunk out our day due to long queues etc. Although not sure what the queues will be like this time of year.

We enjoyed doing the bus tours as they tell you about the history of the area you're in and expose you to areas you never thought of going to, plus you can hop on and hop off when you wish.

For food, we enjoyed Carmine's at times square, MASSIVE portions and reasonably priced. We never really researched food places before, which was mistake as we ate where ever was closest when we got hungry.

Also, try and take in the city. You can become exhausted quickly if you're trying to fit everything in when sightseeing. Go to Soho, Chelsea or the meatpacking district and live it up a little.

enjoy.

i go next week for the 2nd time.
$700 for a week is not a lot, we got through $2500 last year in a week, taking the same amount for 4 nights this time.

Staten island ferry is free and you'll get great views of the city, and the statue of liberty.

Doesn't massive portions go for most food in the States? ;)

The only place I know of is Katz deli. Apparently a bit of an institution. If I was going to NY I'd certainly be saving some restaurants and bars on TripAdvisor (or similar) to check out. I'd hate to go all that way to such a foodie city and get stuck in over-priced touristy places! There's loads of threads in La Cuisine about NY food, such as this: https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18743515

I was in NYC last month. End of September so queues for Statue of Liberty etc were minimal.

There for 5 days, I took £800 as spending money and still came back with £300. We purchased a 7 day subway ticket and the NYC CityPass. So we made a lot of savings there and did EVERYTHING tourist wise.

You can go to NY with £500 but that depends if you are the sort of person who wee's their money up the wall on crap just because they are on holiday.

Depends what you want to do when you're there, I went in Sept this year, budgeted for $200 per day ($1200 in total) and brought back just over $400. Don't get me wrong, I pre-paid my New York Yankees and Top of the Rock tickets but that's it.

Go up the Empire State building very early, if you don't you'll be stuck in a queue among numerous floors for hours wishing you could go back (you can't)

BTW when you get up there it looks exactly like this. This picture is 99% of the experience, in fact, if I were to add the queueing to the real experience, this would be 110% of the experience.

Prefer the Rockefeller as you can see the ESB from it:

I went at 9.30 at night. It still an amazing view.

Reckon tickets will be a bit cheaper in the coming days?

Though I do wonder if they'll let a near 7ft Indian man (my friend) and a mixed race man (moi) with a Muslim name in :p.

Word is dont bother going to Statue of Liberty as you cant see anything on it, but get the Staten Island Ferry (free) and it goes right past SOL for awesome pics. I didnt get time on my last trip.

Head to Crif Dogs for amazing Hotdogs, or Russ and Daughters for an exceptional breakfast.

If you like a beer, the Brooklyn Brewery Tour is totally worth 45 minutes, and if you make them laugh theyll plow you with free drinks. It's also right next door to Brooklyn Bowl which is ace.
