i started building a new intel system this month, and i am wanting new GFX from team green but dont want to brake the bank.
what card would be an upgrade from the 7970 i am running in my AMD system now.

EDIT:
just had a look and price wise i could stretch to the cheapest 780 but if i could get away with a 770 i would be happier, however i am wanting to upgrade not side step from the 7970

Recommend the Inno3D 780, the Ultra DHS if you can afford it. What a quiet and cracking card. Only thing is the large cooler, so take that into account for any SLI.

It's still an excellent card
Would you be able to wait till the new cards come out possibly, see what they have to offer and then possibly pick up one of those or a current gen 780/780Ti?

7970 still kicking but? i would keep the 7970 but i am water cooling and my rev2 windorce will not take a full cover block.

Its equivalent to a 280X so Im sure you can look at reviews that have that and compare to the higher cards.

Nothing is confirmed yet, even the NDA is under NDA, but there is an event on the 19th from nvidia where "next gen technologies" will be shown.

OcUK have cards and are testing them, so cant be too long now.

well the system is not looking to be done till next month as its a full new build it not getting done in one buy so i will hold off until then ever if i just get a current gen card at a price drop

Thats quite cool, didn't know they got stuff this early :D

When the new cards come out, aren't they going to effectively take the prices of the current gen cards with small reductions on those?

If you're water-cooling then theres got to be something to be said for a standard 290 + water block which will be cheaper than a 780 with no block...

wanting to talk advantage of g-sync too or i would sell my 7970 and but a ref 7970 for water

One could argue you will get more benefit from a 770 and G-SYNC than a 780 and G-SYNC*. Making those lower frame rates look better.

No?

*considering £££

i was looking at SLI 760's or 770's, i cant get SLI 780 as i just dont have £700 to blow on cards. would one 780 out do 2 760's or 770's

Look at some game benchmarks for GTX 970 two-way SLI compared to the (still, despite massive price drop) considerably more expensive R9 295 X2. It's mostly neck and neck, with the 970s even doing better in a few instances.

Nvidia have priced this card perfectly to entice more people into buying two of them instead of one, thereby spending extra on their products than they might have. That's what they will get out of pricing them so "cheap". And all you need is a 650w PSU to run two really comfortably.

And game drivers with further optimizations will be coming out.

So yeah. Unless you want to wait to see what Radeon come up with in response, the 970 is the way to go.
