Going travelling, cancelling contract

Hi there. Around November time I'll be leaving the country for several months. I'd ideally like to cancel my mobile phone contract (T-Mobile) as I'll not be using my phone while abroad.

A quick search on the T-Mobile forum suggests that I'd need to pay the monthly bill cost multiplied by the number of months left on the contract. It's a 24 month contract (at £15/month) and I'm only 4 months in, paying £300 to leave my contract now seems foolish.

Is this correct? I assumed there would be a cancellation fee and that I would have to send the phone back. That's something I would have settled for, but now it seems like my best option would be to leave the contract running and leave some money in my bank account to pay for the monthly charges while I'm away.

best thing to do is just ring your provider and find out

i know people who have had the contract cancelled for nothing but usually people have to pay the remaining months

the most usual option is that you pay for the remaining months (without the tax though!) and get a small discount for early payment. also with some providers you may be able to take your account down to a lower price level before you cancel

you keep the phone and sell it to pay towards the above

You don't have to send the phone back - its outside the terms of your contract.

I was suggesting that this might be the case if the way the cancellation worked was that you didn't have to pay off the contract. I.e. you pay a £40 cancellation fee, send the phone back and they call it quits.

It appears that this is not the case though, and that I must pay off the contract in full should I cancel.

Aye, but a PAYG would suffice. I don't need a phone with X amount of minutes and texts if I can't take advantage of them. Having said that, my phone has SatNav and internet capabilities so it will pay to bring it along anyway.

And people wonder why some don't like 2 year contracts!

Best bet would be to try and ring as mentioned, probably get you nowhere though.

What phone do you have? If it's a decent phone then selling it may make most of the money back on the contract.

try ring them and explain your situation, even if they wont cancel your contract they might suspend payments for the time you are away.

what phone do you currently have as if they wont cancel the contract most recent phones go for £100 - £300+ on ebay which will go some way towards funding the cancelation

There used to be something in place to put contracts into hibernation.
No idea if t-mob still do it or not though. Ring up and ask :)

Just phoned T-Mobile and the deal is that I would either have to pay £249 to break the contract or have someone else take on the contract. They don't offer any kind of postponing or hibernation of the contract.

I think I will keep the contract. It's only £15/month, and the phone's features (SatNav, MP3 player, camera etc) will come in handy anyway. I'll just make sure I leave enough money in my account to cover the cost of the monthly payments while I'm out of the country.

They might be able to add a bolt on , so you can get free mins calling from
abroad.

Yep, there are boosters that can be added, think there is a euro one and an international one

It may be worth asking if you can suspend the contract for a period. I know orange allow you to temporarily disconnect for up to 6 months and then reconnect on return without having to pay fees. Might be worth asking if T-Mob do something similar.

Edit: Never mind, just seen the later post.
