Goldring NS1000 issues

I use DH1 for games with a significant amount of environmental audio. DH3 can get messy if there's in-game reverb going on.

@robrx - do you change the setting each time or can you save a prefernce setting say #1 & #2?

No, i can't save a preference except for the EQ settings. I do have GAME, MOVIE & MUSIC presets though which i don't think the DG has. I also set it at 192KHz sample rate which isn't shown in the pics i posted up. Woops :p

I bought a pair 2 months ago for £60 brand new and had no issues at all, I'm very happy with them. Looks I got the good batch

Well my second pair of ns1000's arrived yesterday and is being sent back to the Jersey company tomorrow. Both sides went 'echoey' when playing anything and then the right side just stopped working. I am so very unimpressed with Goldring, they seem to have some serious quality control issues.

Do I risk going for a third pair or go get a refund and go for something different? Does anyone have any reccomendations? ANR is a must for me as I travel a lot, but apart from that I'm not too picky.

Is it the same with noise cancelling on or off? If it only happens with it on, have you checked the battery? I only mention because uneven hiss followed by sound cutting out in one or both ears sounds exactly like what happens when my battery gets low.

If it's a genuine problem, it definitely sounds like the current Play batch is bad. I would go for a refund and only consider NS1000s from another supplier. I guess most people would go for different headphones in your position.

I think I've read that that's something to do with reverb or echo being enabled on Asus boards or certain sound cards and there's drivers available to stop it. Not sure if it is what you're experiencing but mentioned it just in case!

It's pretty much the same with ANR on or off, I tried another battery on the off chance as well, still no joy. The echoey effect might be slightly worse with the ANR on, but not by a lot.
The right side now seems to work intermittently again, either way they're going back after only one day. Rotten luck, I think I might try Superfi, I can't justify £280 on a pair of QC15's, the missus would quite literally kill me.
I have to agree though, either Play have a dodgy batch in at the minute or Goldring have taken to employing chimps to fling them together.

Well so far the only problems I've heard of are from NS1000s bought from Play in the last month. Quality has otherwise seemingly been great for the last 3+ years.

Another thought has crossed my mind: a few years ago I bought a copy of Rome: Total War from a reputable channel island based retailer (not play and it wasn't via a 3rd party market or anything). It looked perfect. One day a patch was issued and the game refused to update and I eventually contacted Activision. Turned out to be a very high quality fake with a cracked - no-cd .exe on it. From what info I got out of the retailer they got it from a seemingly legit supplier and were looking into it. Got a very grovelling apology from someone that seemed to be at senior management level.

Seems a bit far fetched but someone has mentioned a different cable length. Could this be something more serious than a bad batch?

Global Inferno has contacted Goldring. Lets see if anything turns up.

>implying possible fakes

It's not as far fetched as you'd believe and does happen every so often, however 99% of the time they're caught before they go onto sale. I once bought a 2GB SD card direct from a well regarded company, when I eventually went to offload the photos to the PC some of the images were corrupt and it turned out it was a 1GB card faked to be a 2GB card. They swiftly apologised and refunded me.

It would be interesting to get a reply from Goldring to see though, however their site does list the cable as a 1m.

I wasn't talking about the 1.8m to 1m reduction. There's been a case of someone returning a set to Play then getting a replacement from Superfi via Amazon. The replacement set was fine but they did notice that the cable on the good set was slightly shorter.

Edit: bad batch or fakes? Either way let's see if we can find ways to identify them. Measuring the cable seems one way. Any other thoughts? Macro photos of certain parts?

I just measured the cable length on my second pair to go back to Play and it's 1.5m, the listing on the Play website however states that the supplied cable is 1.0m. Surely Goldring wouldn't just start making the cable longer, it would cost them more per pair. Is it worth mentioning this to Goldring as well do you think?

Interesting. I've only heard of 1.0m (recent) or 1.8m (original) cables being included. 1.5m is not standard.

Well just for info, my recently bought set
with no issues has a 1.5M cable.

PS
echo effect sounds like a sound processing problem to me.

If it's a sound processing problem then my iPod, PC, stereo and laptop are all afflicted by it then, which is pretty unlikely.

Just filled in the returns form on the Play website and packaged them up AGAIN, will get a refund and get a pair from Superfi I think, unless anyone can recommend another set of noise reduction cans for £50?

Hmm, this issue seems like there might be more to it. I hoped, as I'm sure most did, that it were just a few from a bad batch. I had considered the possibility that Play were selling lower quality pairs, looks like this might be a possibility, sadly. One thing that does puzzle me about the fake possibility, are these phones well known enough for anyone to warrant making fakes? Popular Sennheiser IEM's, sure, but Goldring headphones? Look how many people just go and buy Sennheiser HD555's, just as an example of a sub £100 phone, because they are a well known brand. Doesn't matter to some if they are paying more for less, so to speak. It's a well known brand, and that sells them. Goldring's sales would be certainly lower if we were not recommending them to people here at OcUK.

The first pair I had from Play, sounded fantastic and had a barely detectable hiss, more like a whooshing sound that was the same volume in each ear. But the left ear cup clicked annoyingly with the slightest touch, a yawn or quick head movement. To me at least it would seem like a bad batch or Goldring are really cutting corners with the ns1000's.
Is a company as big as Play really going to sell fakes? I can't imagine it myself. I think I've just been unlucky.
