I am looking to buy one of these its a 2007 plate and its 6 speed 105bhp

its done about 80k miles and dealer wanting around £6200 for it.

Just want to know what do people think of this model? its 3 door and has a nice sporty look, i was just wondering what are common problem with them and if i should go for the 2.0 tdi GT model and spent the extra bit of money on that ?

thanks

It might have a 'nice sporty look' (It doesn't really, it's an almost bottom of the range Golf) but the engine is absolutely ancient and comically slow. You can do much better.

I'd only opt for the 1.9 if you were doing a decent amount of mileage (20k+ a year) to justify it. If you're mileage is less than that there's some better petrol engines which would make for a nicer drive.

On the plus side it's pretty reliable and I don't think it has a DPF.

The 2.0 GT model comes in 140 and 170PS flavours I believe.

I *THINK* the GT Sport shares brakes and suspension with the GTI 2.0 TFSi.

Based on that, If you want a diesel golf, I'd be going for a 170PS GT Sport.

Well I certainly wouldn't want one for pottering around town, it's a rep mobile engine for company cars, reliable, frugal but agricultural.

If it's the same as the A3 range only the 170 gets the bigger brakes of the 2.0T.

I am not wanting speed or anything like that I travel to lancaster every week so need something economical.

I took it for a drive and it didnt seem gutless to me at all but its group 6 insurance and i just want to know if its worth looking about for a GT 2.0 model I just want the insurance to shoot up as insurance quote on this is £800 a year

I think my Fabia VRS nicely illustrates that you can have something with a bit more go than 105BHP from a diesel and still get good MPG.

180PS, 0-60 in sub 7 seconds, and I get 55mpg+ on a run with the cruise at 60 (I got 56.8 door to door on the 220 miles from Gloucester to Scarborough, including 30's,40's,NSL single carridgeway, Dual Carridgeway and Motorway) Cruise at 70 still achieved high 40's on the same route consistently.

The Golf comes with the same 1.4 TSI TurboCharged and Supercharged in a 170PS tune in the GT Sport Guise also.

Based on that, do the maths and work out if you'd actually save money getting a diesel.

£6200 for a 105bhp Diesel Golf? You should try some alternatives, that's such a boring car for 6 grand, no matter how sporty it looks it's the complete opposite.

well what else more I can get for that kind of money? a golf is a good car im not wanting anything too flash thats going to cost me a fortune to insure and run

You should be able to get a GT TDI for £6k which comes as a 2.0 140BHP or 170BHP. Or a 1.9 with 150BHP, didnt know they did a 105

Not that exciting but I had a 140 for a couple of years and it was a bit noisy/rough but power was fairly good. From what I hear the 170 has too much turbo lag.

I know it's a bit of a change from the Golf and some people on here may object but personally I think this may be up your street:

130bhp, cheap as chips to insure and run, along with an excellent interior + exterior. Being a Punto may put you off (Did me at first), but after spending a fair bit of time around one it's really won me over and is a fantastic car.

They never did a 150bhp mk5 golf...

The sport is not a low model that would be an 's'.....and the petrols are worse that the diesels so you could do worse.

What a bout a 2.0l sport. 40bhp more....newer engine.

Well of course it's no Mercedes, but it isn't quite a plastic nightmare. The one's I've been in have felt reasonably well put together and it doesn't feel 'cheap'.
