Hey guys, just started back up playing golf again after a long hiatus, and have been given a set of nic eenough Hippo clubs by my brother's father-in-law who has been playing with him a while, and I'm hoping to start joining them quite regularly, he's nicely set me up with the set which is a 3,4,5,6,8,9,PW,SW iron set and a nice Wilson putter, one thing I'm missing is a nice driver, or tee club, I've always been a much stronger Iron player than wood, can do well with a wood but end up with a strong hook to the right on most drives, which I really need ot correct, but can usually out drive with a low iron.

Idealy I'm looking for a 1 Iron/Driving Iron (I know they're known under both monikers) as my brother will more than likely have an older 3 wood kicking around I can use on the range to get myself in properly with woods.

As said though, I'd really feel more comfortable with a 1/Driving iron, the style and feel of them just works a lot more for me. No idea where to look though, have looked around on the 'bay etc.. and seen some at decent low prices, which I'd happily pay, no point in shelling out a massive amount right away really, is there? Been finding it very hard to find one that will match the rest of the set, so might have to compromise and go for a different make club, which I know isn't the best idea when you really wanna have a full matched set.

Any ideas/suggestions though? No way I wanna drop a massive amount on a club right now, just started getting back into it, but need something to get me starting out on the ~400 yard holes :)

Cheers

Personally i've never even used a driving iron so i can't really give any advice about them, but it sounds like your best bet to me would be to find a new ish singular 2 iron that you could hit off the tee. This will probably go quite a way further than your hippo 3 iron as it will be a much higher quality club. Perhaps go down to a local shop and see if they have anything second hand or perhaps even have a look on the bay.

No problemo mate, thanks for the tips, I wasn't sure if its best to consider a 2 or go straight for the 1, what would be a generally good but not too expensive make to look over on the bay? Seeing some Ping and Callaway ones which, from what I have read aren't bad quality at all?

Any of the top brands really, there are a fair few to choose from, most of the time you get what you pay for. Couple of examples

Callaway
Ping
Mizuno
Taylormade
Cleaveland
Titelist

Just done a quick search on the bay and come up with this, type in
CLEVELAND LAUNCHER 2 IRON TT ACTION LITE REGULAR SHAFT and something like that would be ideal for you i think.

Roid, thanks for the info, definitely would like to look into those, and that 2 looks nice, have also been looking around at pull's advice and seen some nice utility 2 replacements that look excellent, as well as one drivr I spotted that was meant to correct hook more on drives due to its square head, whether or not that would help or is justa gimmick, I don't know, but having fun looking around :)

Tim - Agree with Pull2808 on this. Get a rescue, not a driving iron. Far more forgiving and very useful club to have!

With regards to a driver with a draw bias, don't do it! You would be better off spending £20 on a lesson with a local pro. The reason you are slicing the ball is because your swing path isn't correct and is generating too much side spin. A lesson with a pro and a properly fitted driver (again, your pro can advise) will be of more benefit that driver that will only slightly mask the slice.

I would have suggested a rescue club but since he preferes irons thats why i opted for the 2 iron. Also i much prefer an iron to a rescue (personal preference). Given the choice between a 21 degree rescue and a 3 iron i'd take the 3 iron all day long.

As a matter of fact, has anybody here actually ever tried a driving iron, i'd never entertain the thought of having one but just wondered if anybody had.

I am the same as you roid, I much prefer an iron in my hand. I am off single figures and would use the Mizuno 2 iron I have any day of the week but as Tim is just starting out, 9/10 times a recovery would be the best option.

Thanks for the advice guys, just taken the new irons down to the range, had a look in their shop afterwards and the recommended one that they had in (surprise!) which was a Ben Sayers recovery/utility club, equivalent of a 2 iron (I believe 17 degrees) for £39.95, have had a look round and seen that on the 'bay for about £20, brand new, not sure on people's thoughts on this? Bearing in mind I don't want to be paying too much and going too high on price.

Cheers :)

Id look at a rescue with a little more loft that 17deg, ideally i'd go for at least a 20 if not 23ish degree. Best thing is to get to a shop and hit a few and get a feel, i tend to avoid ebay for clubs as there's a lot of fakes around. Its worth the extra bit of money as warentee peace of mind etc.

It depends, if Tim can hit his 3 iron well, then there wouldn't be any need for a more lofted club.

I would avoid ebay, you just never know if it is a fake. If you are ever down the P/Boro area, I have a 17 degree Mizuno fli-hi you could look at ;)

I play with a guy who uses a driving iron, subtly differen't than a 1 iron though. A mate has got a 1 iron and it is a beast to hit, but when you get one out of the middle and see it sail 220+yds it's quite satisfying.

I'd also recommend a Hybrid to start with, personally i've got 3 & 4 TM Burner hybrids and also 3 & 4 TM r7 irons, depends on where i am playing and weather as to what i use as the hybrids get the ball up in the air very easily compared to the irons, a windy day on a links course means the hybrids stay in the boot, a nice sunny day with a little breeze means the irons get left behind.
