My mum is considering buying one of these as she really wants a convertible, particularly one that can seat 4 adults and has an electric folding metal roof. Apart from the 307, Megane and upcoming Ford Vignale, I cant think of any others that would fit the bill for around 20k.


Im not entirely sure of what sort of depreciation to expect on a car like this. I know that the Golfs hold thier value quite well, what do you reckon?

Yep, its got to be a metal roof. Very set on this. I think it is just from being set in her ways and her safety concerns. Im not actually sure of how much safer metal roofs are than fabric roofs, but thats another thread.....

She isnt a BMW fan either. Dont know why.....inbuilt stereotyping!! She still thinks SEATS are crappy spanish rustbuckets with a bad reputation

Following on.......

we are going to some PR thing that the local VW garage are having for the car, just to have a look at it.

But also........

Just walked past the garage near my house. They have 2 Audi A4 cabrios. Both are on 03 plates in Silver and are the Sport models. One is a 1.8T and the other is a 1.9TDI. I know that both are puny engines, but they are 20k and the garage will p/x my mums car (corolla Tsport) and will offer her up to 5 years 0% finance. Is this a no brainer? I am trying to convince her that she doesnt need a metal roof!!

Convince her she doesn't need a metal roof, then send her down the e46 route...

definitely wont happen, shes not a BMW fan. I prefer the Audis anway. I dont want her to lose the function of indicating

I don't know, maybe the Audi would be a better buy for her?

The BMW is the best drivers cabriolet for sure, and its what I'd have but lets think about what the typical woman driver wants..

a) Style
b) Image
c) Prestige
d) Looks

The BMW cabrio's have a bit of a wide boy image, whereas the Audi's have a decent image and are VERY pretty looking cars. Couple this to the fact they are often a tad cheaper than a BMW reflecting the fact keen drivers prefer the BM and I think the A4 Cabrio is probably a better buy..

Thats pretty sound advice. I also think that the Audis will hold their value as much as the BMW's.

is she scared of rolling the car or something?

yep, if she were ever in accident where her car rolled......

have you explained to her if soft top convertibles were not fully tested and approved for roll over scenarios then they simply wouldn't be able to sell them?
put it this way, the Audi is available in the US, and we all know what their legal culture is in the event of an accident.

I know, I have, I told her it is all in her head.
