Hi all, good to see this website and forum is still running! Its been about 20 years since I last built a gaming PC and to get me looking in the right direction I would appreciate some proposals for components to be considering a build from scratch (excluding monitors, speakers, keyboard and mouse).

- Budget 3-5k....I am thinking i will need to push it toward 5k
- Required to run demanding golf sim software at 4k resolution (secondary to that, general FPS gaming and processing of drone data locally, home cinema)
- Open to overclocking

Unsure how the below fits into it but:
- Good audio capabilities will be required as it will most likely be paired with an in ceiling speaker system (for golf and home cinema)
- 4 visual displays will be connected to it (1x projector, 1x touchscreen, 2 gaming monitors), with max 3 being used at one time

Appreciate any advise on this item - cheers!
 
What are the requirements for the golf sim? Does it use multithreading? Does it prefer AMD or nvidia? Does it use ray tracing and support upscaling?
 
Hi, there are 3 different programs I will be using - but i have no experience with them yet.
- One of them states AMD GPU and Nvidia Quadro not supported
- it doesn't look like ray tracing is yet supported on any program, but that could possibly change
- they are all developed on the unity engine

Recommended requirements are below, but i would like to exceed these drastically as there are new versions of the software coming within the next year

- Intel i7 or plus
- 32GB RAM
- Nvida RTX 4070 Ti 12gb ram

GPU: I've done no research on which 4090 to pick, but it is the best card right now. It has 5x outputs (2x hdmi, 3x dp), but the 4090 in general can only use 4 at once (I don't know how Asus have configured these).

CPU: I don't know if those games would benefit from the X3D (Sims often do), so I just followed the i7 your spec mentioned.

The motherboard has spdif, if you need that.

Been doing a little viewing on yt about golf sims. Think this is all massive, massive overkill for golf siming. seen vids of people running sim on older laptops, just saying the integrated gpu's let it down, and others playing 4k on 3060's etc. Below is an example.
there's another i can call up where he recommends not going for 8gb of ram but 16gb...all this 4090 with 64gb ram??? I just think overkill and too much money

so below he's running 4k sim with a 12thgen i3 and a 6700xt


also the unity engine is used in lots of games, and one that really comes to mind is Escape from Tarkov, which we know massively, massively benefits from 3d v cache

If i was building a rig, i'd go b650 for upgradeability, 7800x3d (though this is prob massive overkill also, so maybe a 7600 more than good enough or wait for the 9000 series which s/b announced on Monday and from rumours come out in july....well, we should find out in 2 days), 32gb ram and a 4070super....that'll eat thru and golf sim I've seen online, and has plenty of grunt. and it'll save you £1k also

My next upgrade would going full pcie5 mobo for upgrades, so put a b650e-e in there as decent price drop on the board..stuck the 1000w psu in also
I just wouldn't be dropping £1700 on a hgpu this late in the cycle..use the 4070super, then if you want to go large, get the 5080/5090 when it comes out later in the year (hense going for more powerful psu and maybe a 5090 might like pcie5 gpu slot...who knows)
If you ant different ram which is expo rated, i'd look elsewhere. OCuk ram pricing is expensive
alternative to the m480 ssd would be something like the XPG Gammix S70 blade 2tb...ocuk don't sell it so you'll have to search elsewhere but had a 7400/6800 read/write with good endurance etc....1st place i looked has for £125 so similar price

I'd still prob hold off and see the new 9000 release announcement before going more expensive cpu...If you really want premium 4k gaming etc at all costs now I'd limit myself to a 4080super for £950 and save the £700

and reason for going nvidia over amd for gpu is dlss....and the fact is if there's a game that truly would benefit from frame generation, it'd be something like a golf sim. It's not fast paced but the extra frames will make it far smoother( flight sim another prime example that massively benefits from it)

Thanks for that. I'm coming around to the idea of going for a 4070/4080, as temporary solution until the 5090 comes out - and will take all components in this thread into account and investigate further.
Regarding GSPro software, you are right - this PC is overkill for that particular software, however the other two pieces of golf sim software I will be using is Foresight FSX Play (and possibly trackman TPS/Virtualgolf in the future). FSX Play is incredibly choppy on my current Razer Blade 3070RTX. Trackmans VirtualGolf 3 is coming out later this year, and from what I see that could also be very demanding. The rest of my sim fitout has cost significantly more than what im paying here (been waiting 5 years for this), which is why i dont want the PC to bottleneck me.

Also, I will be FPS gaming on this system & also using it to generate very heavy photogrammetry models compiled by drone imagery (doing it locally vs via cloud provides a better output).

I reread originsal post and was concentrating on the golf sim part...but for 4k gaming, I'm still not convinced spending so much for a gpu when the new ones are meant for release at the end of the year.
I looked at photogrammetry, but last time I did that was a uni, and that was 30+ years ago, and we we plotting maps using stereoscopic lens with the photo's below...how times have changed
from quick look earlier it just says for recommendation 8 cores, and another that the heavy lifted can be shoved onto the gpu...so @Tetras is correct, 14700k could be more useful, but then again, those processors generate a lot of heat, require a lot more power and still on a eof platform...a 7700x would be better as single core performance better than a 7800x3d and still provide decent gaming(7800x3d is really a gaming cpu, even though I use it fro work for wfh), (but again don't want to spend £300+ on cpu that are just about to ber replaced) if heavy lifting done by gpu...maybe not so important....why i suggested waiting for the 9000 announcement at least on monday(hopefully)...if singe core performance increases 19% as some leaks suggest, something like a 9700x would prob outperforme a 14700k.....they just wont be able to compete (my thoughts) till they release their next gen cpu at the end of the year, with new mobo's etc

Remember a razorblade3070 mobile gpu isn't anywhere close to the desktop equivalent so a 4070super will eat it alive...and with dlss you'll still get decent fps gaming at 4k...Hardware unboxed had 4070 4k raster at 59fps av...that's before you add dlss/fsr etc...a 3070desktp was 38, mobile version can be 10/20%slower than that...not saying don't go for higher..just a lot of money with new gpu's around the corner

guess I'm saying if you can wait a bit, I'd do that, esp if dropping £3k to £5k on a pc...if you need something now, then I'd look at getting decent performance without breaking the bank that can be upgraded easily
 
I found reading through this really interesting and with the amount of money planned for this build, I understand possibly waiting for next gen parts. One thing I've read a lot on here though is that if you wait, you'll be waiting forever because there's always something new just around the corner :)

:cry:True, but literally AMD annoucing their upcoming cpu's tomorrow at Computex (they're the 1st keynote speech) so rumours say (they are speaking tomorrow so we'll see), and lineup just leaked also.... Nvidia GPU's later in the year but like previous launches, it'll be the high end gpu's 1st, which is what the OP wants. I'd ask what a person that bought a 3090ti thought after spending £1800 and having the 4090 come out 6 months later

how soon would you need this build? Personally I would wait until 50 series from nvidia is announced if you are looking for top notch 4k performance

I agree, new stuff really is just about to come out and it's worth the wait in this situation. I think I would have cried spending £1,800 and 6 months later the 4090 coming out lol.
