Golf Startup Issues

Hi guys,

I bought a VW Golf 1.4 TSI 122 a few weeks ago from Evans Halshaw. I've been having some issues on cold start ups.

Basically, the car shakes a little and revs higher than usual for 20-30 seconds. Now if I apply gas and rev the engine whilst this is happening then the car doesn't sound good at all. The noise can be heard in the video and it sounds like it's coming from underneath the car.

The water pump was already changed under warranty and I don't think it's the timing chain. Evans Halshaw say there isn't anything wrong with the car and they are unable to recreate the problem in the garage. I was thinking of taking it to an independent garage to see what they can find, but was wondering if anyone here had any ideas as to what this could be.

Hmmm....the thing is though that this problem only occurs on first start. So if I switch the ignition off and start the engine again it starts normal, no noise, shaking or anything.

In the video you can see that at the end it stops making that noise.

that would be as the exhaust has warmed up sufficiently. Get under it when it's cold and give the CAT a slight bang with a hammer

Okay cool I will try that.

Could it be that there is something wrong with the actual engine that is putting more stress on the CAT? Trying to think of what could be causing the shaking as well.

So I got the car checked out by a VW specialist and the mechanic couldn't find anything wrong with it. No fault codes showed up, nothing. He recommended an oil and filter change, but still having this issue on cold start up.

Oil and filter change.. what the...?!!? Sure it wasn't a salesman that looked it it?!

No codes so nothing wrong with it obviously

Downpipe?

Slack timing chain?

I don't think it's timing chain as that's more of a rattling noise. I've watched some videos of slack timing chains and it doesn't sound like that at all.

When I first took my car to have the water pump looked at, mechanic said he'll run some tests on the car, and I'm pretty certain that this issue started after this. Water pump was of course replaced though.
