I'm looking at getting a new car soon and want something with decent MPG as I do around 300 miles a week, which is my main reason for looking at the Golf?

I'm looking at the 1.9 TDi around 2-3 years old.

Anybody think of any alternatives/reasons why I should/shouldn't go with the Golf?

Cheers,

The Golf premium will probably negate any fuel saving compared to some of the competition. Focus is worth considering. 16k a year isn't mega miles so you might find that going diesel over petrol won't actually give the saving you expect.

That's what I was wondering too. I've also looked at the Civic Type S...

Double!?! That sounds ridiculous - do some more quotes, it's only a badge.

Focus 2.0 TDCi is worth a look if you want a diesel, maybe even a Mondeo

I've done a few quotes on comparison sites, all come out similar. Double the price of the 1.9 TDi for the 2.0 GT TDi. Ideally looking for something Golf/Focus sized but not dead set on a diesel if the MPG is reasonable.

20 years old and you want to sink £10,000 into a 1.9 TDI Golf?

Most Golfs of that age are 2.0 TDI - some are GT, some are not. The 1.9TDI was only kept for the bottom of the range model.

£10K is my absolute maximum, this will be my third car coming from a 1.3 Yaris. I want something i can consider a bit of an upgrade along with something a bit less feminine...

Also, I didn't say I wanted to sink £10K in to a Golf - that was the purpose of this thread, to get other recommendations.
