Golf Thread

First proper round in a while today, nice par on the opening 509 yarder (hit a sweet 5 wood from 175 up onto the green), par on the next 193 yard par 3 and went to pieces after that. Lost 4 balls on the 5th, ended up under a tree next to the water so chipped out then fatted it into the water, took 15 :D

Ended up with 104 on a par 69, first time playing it. Still enjoyed it which is the main thing!

Oh and in response to your reply to me CSSDoctor, I don't know my swing speed, it's on my golfing to-do list. Thanks for the recommendations on the different golf balls, I'll see if I can get a 3-pack of each one you recommended so that I can try them out.

My teaching pro obviously has a launch monitor (GC2 with HMT) so I get my club speed data when I have lessons, but if you can get on a launch monitor somewhere and do a gapping session it will not only give you your swing speed, but will also give you your average club distances as well - very useful to know when you are on the course if you are serious about improving

I don't have mine yet, but have a rough idea based on average distance carry from my lessons with my 6i (180yd) so I work out each of the other clubs from that on a guess of 10yds difference per club. This, combined with my GPS watch has seen my scores get very close to breaking 80 this year (would have had a 78 if it wasn't for 2 bad shots a couple rounds ago)

There are plenty of decent quality balls out there these days, so if you can get your hands on a few of them to try it is certainly fun to try them

Callaway Chrome Soft (I want to get some of the yellow/black Truvis ones to try after seeing someone playing them at our golf outing last weekend)

Taylormade - Project (a), TP, TPx

Srixon - Q-star, Z-star, AD333 Tour

Bridgestone - B330 and B330S, B330RX and B330RXS

Wilson Staff - The DX range, Wilson Duo

Never seen or tried them, but I have heard positive things about Vice golf balls from a golf forum I am a member of

I would guess based on how far I've hit certain clubs that I have a reasonably good swing speed. At the local course I played this weekend there is a ditch on the opening par 5 that is measured at 300 yards away from the standard men's tees and I was under 10 yards short of the ditch. However, that's obviously total distance with rollout. I would guess I carry my driver somewhere around 260-270 yards on a good strike, the 22 degree hybrid I carry usually goes over 200 yards, and I would say I get my 5 iron somewhere around 190 yards.

I feel like if I could remove the odd poor strike and improve my short game I would probably be getting much lower scores than I currently post. I'm like so many other amateurs in that I neglect to practice my short game when I go to the range, so that's something I need to sort out, and I'd also like to get some more lessons booked in with a pro to iron out a few kinks in my swing. For example, yesterday I posted 4 pars in a row and then randomly got a triple bogey on the next hole, so that needs sorting.

i dont hit the ball very far with my mid irons as i tend to have a short back swing and "punch" my shots,
7 iron ~150 yards, 5 iron ~170, il carry ~200+ yards with my driver on the range with the mid/low quality balls they have there,
the back fence is ~250 yards away and ive bounced and rolled upto it quite often but i couldnt imagen me being able to hit over it,
or even hit it without the ball bouncing first

Yeah, a short backswing will obviously limit your ability to hit the ball further, but can sometimes promote a better quality of strike. It's easier to control a half or three quarter backswing compared to a full swing, and I often shorten the backswing if I'm hitting into a particularly narrow fairway or hitting an approach onto a green that's guarded by water or lots of bunkers.

Personally I'd say that there are other aspects that effect distance more than backswing length. Quality of strike, how you're delivering the club (striking down for irons, up for a driver, whether you're compressing the ball, etc), and correct swing sequencing (feeling like you're starting the swing from the ground upwards) will all have a greater effect on distance than swing length in my opinion.

if you had a budget of £800 for bag, clubs inc putter and a wheely thingamajig for the bag.

What should I get?

Very vague at the moment as you are new to the game etc. The best thing I would suggest is get a couple of lessons and ask them what they think. Once you have an idea then go to a golf shop and try some out. See what you think of the ones the pro may have suggested to you. You don't have to buy them there and then. If you are thinking of getting a set of clubs now just so you can get practing then it really doesn't matter as long as you don't spend top dollar for them as like you said previously if you're a natural you could out class them within 6 months. There are plenty of reviews on youtube. I would suggest checking Rick Shiels out as he does some good reviews on all different ability golf clubs. Also on pretty much all online sites if you look at a set of clubs they will have a rating on whether the like are for a high, mid or low handicapper.

I want a set of clubs so I can start going on courses.

Not allowed to club share at my Dads golf club.

Had a look in the golf store, very expensive, think I need to do some research.

If you just want to get out on to a course asap I would get a set of either 2nd hand clubs. I guess bag, trolley etc really does not matter because you wont replace them as you get better at golf. Find a cheap set of irons or some second hand ones. When you improve you will then get the bug to go out and test some more equipment.

Putter ultimately comes down to feel. You could spend £10 on a putter and use it for 15 years or £200 and use it for a few months.

Dunlop and Wilson so cheap sets of golf clubs from Sports Direct and that will get you going for now.

First things first, absolutely do not buy online without trying clubs first and getting fitted, unless you're going for one of the cheap all-in-one sets. I started out with a very basic Dunlop set that cost somewhere around £150 for everything and it lasted me for a year until I was happy that golf was going to be a lifelong sport, at which point I got fitted for a nice set of Mizuno irons. That might be the best thing to do at the moment.

Having said that, if you do want to go with a more expensive set then I would suggest getting fitted. The Benross HTX and HTX type R were well reviewed at around the £300-350 mark. The Titleist AP1 716 irons are a superb set of irons at £450 and you'd get years of use out of them. However, once you add a driver, a couple of wedges (the AP1s stop at pitching wedge), a bag, all the bits and pieces you'll need, some packs of golf balls, etc, you're looking at well over £800 imo. If you're happy with the outlay then it's maybe worth it, but for now I'd stick with something cheap and spend the extra on golf lessons. They will get you much further in the long-run than an expensive set of clubs.

have a look at some Taylor Made rocketbladez they are very forgiving and suit most players new to golf , the issue is the shafts you need to have a feel and see if regular flex shafts or stiff etc are more suited. dont just jump on ebay and other sites and buy because they are cheep try and get a feel of the flex in the shafts and go from there.

thanks for the advice, your right I need to try sets out, but the stuff in the golf clubs are way way to expensive.

The equipment sold at Golf Clubs are generally always more expensive than what you see elsewhere. One of the main reasons is because the members will get discounts and ultimately they are the people who are going to be buying from them.

Played on Monday at the Belfry and got out on the Brabazon for £40.

Which is nice.

Got to the famous tenth. Nailed a drive straight at the green but it hit the trees protecting the right side. Got to the green and my ball was just off the back by the big bunkers. Chipped over the bunker and it rolled in for a 2.

Did a little dance but since I was playing alone realised that no-one was watching :(

Ended up with a 79 including the eagle, two birdies, three three-putts, a water-ball and an OB.

Went to Woburn this weekend to watch the Ladies British Masters. I was not as impressed as I was when I watched the Men however I think I am in love with Lexi Thompson... The way she hits her 3 wood is unbelievable!

Any recommendations for a 'better players' iron? I'm looking to move away from my Mizuno JPX EZ irons I have because I feel like I have progressed to the point where I no longer need the massive forgiveness or help with the distance and I'm finding the offset on the clubs annoying. My miss lately has been a slight hook or pull shot and I think that's partly to do with the offset.

I was looking at the Mizuno JPX 850 forged, Taylormade PSi, Titleist AP2 716/CB 716, and the Callaway Apex/Apex Pro. I'm not sure I'm at the level of bladed irons so I was still looking at cavity back irons but something that has a lot less offset while still providing a bit of help on off-centre hits.

I had the JPX 800 Forged irons which were nice and pretty forgiving without much offset. I Have since moved to Srixon z745 irons which are a little smaller but still easy to hit. I would look at the Ping i series as they are quite big and again, without much offset.

Played RCD a few weeks ago now but loved every minute of it, got on for £60 and the course was in perfect condition. Managed to get my way round just a few shots off handicap with a 1 iron off most tees (bar 9th for the photo op, rude not to).

Looking back down the first hole, quite a generous opener until you see the bunkering, like most holes.

9th, blind tee, line is just right of the hotel spire.

Par 3s were awesome, some have carries almost entirely over gorse.

One of the hilarious positions my playing mates found themselves in.

Highlight of the day was hitting theedge of the green on the par 4 16th with a 1 iron

Any recommendations for a golf course in the below area? Looking to organise a game with a friend somewhere in-between the two of us.

We could extend these boundaries a bit, but are looking for something affordable. Played Toot Hill last weekend which was great and a snag at £30 each. Something in a similar price bracket and of similar quality would be great.
