After seeing the epic fail of the v5 thread i started paying attention to these much maligned beasties.

infact if the veccy hadnt have been crunched today leaving me in a rather uncertain financial position i was off to look at one in Fife this weekend

**** all you want as i currently own a 1.8T (albeit in a leon ) and had a v6 4motion previously. i want something cheap and different.

170 v5 fits the bill. its quirky different and i think the noise is something special :)

the rest of it is pure tosh but that doesnt come into it

i mainly want one for the noise, other than that its a semi practical family friendly medium sized hatchback

i will have one and sometime soon,

preferably with a straight thru exhaust and a healthy hike in power :)

I know some people supercharged vr6's. Surely there is similar for the v5?

shhh i have a vision(abeit a drunken one) cooper s charger weegie bodged onto a v5 lump :)

dont give a monkeys about the final power output circa 200 bhp would be ideal but 5 pot and supercharger whine = epic sound womens knickers will drop and men will be in awe. or seomthign like that anyway

Didn't seem overly loud or chavvy tbh.

Never said it was too loud or too chavvy, but doesn't sound anything special.

The Toledo v5 makes sense because it's a top one range bargain. The golf doesn't make sense for this

Same opinion as before. Don't see the point. V6 4Motion, 1.8T or better still... something else.

there isnt a point, i like mk4 golfs i've had a v6 4motion and if i bought another one i'd be constantly comparing it to my old one which i dropped silly money on. i have a 1.8T in my life already a v5 is just well different i'm not saying its good but its different and i like that.

If you want it to be different you could get a car that's not a MK4 Golf?

Maybe look at the Bora V5, pointless car + pointless engine (all imo). At least they're cheap, as is the Toledo V5.

i like mk4 golfs i would also consider a bora though (same thing) toledo would also be a possibility

maybe i should have said a mk4 platform v5 :)

The funny thing is that a Golf v5 would be a better car than many that are owned on this forum, but yet it's regarded here as completely *****.
Gotta love this place :)

At the time the V5 was the second quickest Golf available behind the 4 Motion, and considering the slight difference in performance between the engines I didn't consider the V6 worth the extra. What I did enjoy was driving a comfortable well specced hatchback with a bit of poke , in fact I still miss it, it wasn't the dog that many seem to allude to here, I've no doubt that on paper there are better value cars you can find, but I just remember a very nice hatchback that served me well for 3 years.
