Gonna cancel but want minimum downtime...

So ok I could have searched but looking at the basic procedure for migration in terms of broadband.

Now i know I need a MAC code to allow a minimum downtime to occur but is it just a simple case of phoning my provider and informing them I will be switching to another provider and ask for a MAC code?

What i dont want to happen is to be left without the net for weeks, if I am to terminate there is probably a timescale my provider(BT) will put me on before they deactive the thing?
 
Yes you are correct, they try to tempt you back on the phone for ages though.

There will be minimal downtime, a few days perhaps max.

If you migrate with a MAC key, the total downtime should be in the order of a few hours at most, and the migration should take place within a week or two.

Just a quick word of warning from someone who came from just up the road (Wishaw, or 'Wishie' as the locals would say;))

Don't under any circumstances say the 'T' word (terminate) when on the phone to BT. Even though you ask for a MAC, they seem to hear 'T', and they terminate your broadband service, requiring you to pay for a re-install of broadband on your line.

Same goes for the 'C' word in your title.

Might not happen to you, but it's happened to plenty others.

Thanks for the advise mate, il need to be very careful in the wording but also be looking to get clarification that I WILL receive a MAC key and I wont have to re-install my line......

I dont trust BT at all, their customer service in general is shocking.
 
I have just switched to O2 broadband from BT. I phoned Bt, asked for my MAC key, which they gave to me after trying to sell me a cheaper package. I gave the MAC key to O2 when I put my order through, and had BT broadband right up until the morning of my O2 activating, when it was off for 1 hour before my O2 was active.

so you asked for a MAC key? As simple as that?
Did you have to cancel after the O2 connection or by getting the MAC key that is your cancellation when it transfers over?
 
It should auto-cancel but be sure to cancel any direct debit/etc you have running as ISPs often "forget" to stop billing you.
 
Took 7 days for me to migrate to a new provider and i only had about 5 seconds downtime, just got up one day, couldn't log on, so i went into my router and changed the servers to my new providers, then i put in my new username/password and bingo. :)

Migrated twice now, and both times have been just like that.

i've migrated a couple of times myself and have had no downtime apart from having to change my login details on my router.
