Hi,

Can anybody suggest some good programs that would be suitable for a beginner in 3d animated/computer art? Any pointers greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Gmax. Its free and its the cut down version of 3D studio max, which is one of the most used industry standard packages. AFAIK Gmax doesn't allow you to render, but its perfect for you to practice modelling and texturing.

Blender :)

If I remember correctly, theres a group of 3D artists making a feature length animation with open source software and this is the main 3D package they are using I think.....would have to dig out my 3D World and have a check though to be sure!
