Good Bike lock needed

I use 2 locks for securing my emtb if I intend to leave it anywhere.

A Kryptonite New York Fahgettaboudit Chain and
A Kryptonite New York U-Lock

I tend to use the U-Lock more often, and only take the chain if it's going to be in a less secure location with little foot traffic. The chain is about 4kg so pretty hefty. Oh and most importantly it's insured :)

I boycott kryptonite because I paid £50 for an evolution d lock, sent away my registration and then a few years later discovered my lock can be opened with the barrel of a ballpoint pen! I also found out they ran a scheme whereby they were replacing the locks, however by the time I found out about it they'd stopped replacing locks for customers and wouldn't do anything for me, even though I'd registered the lock with them. Nobody told me my super duper lock was rubbish! Hmph! :)

I bought a Squire Eiger to replace it, which was the lightest lock I could get below £50 with a "gold" rating.

If you are buying 2 looks I'd recommend different brands for this reason.

Also have a cheaper hack bike for leaving in public spaces etc

I only said to somebody yesterday "I use a Kryptonite New York M18 D Lock, it can only be opened with a plasma cutter or a 3 year old Scouser with a ballpoint pen".

I think the ABUS Granite X Plus 540 is also a great option. I saw a lot of people using them too. I feel it's very safe when using this u-lock. The size is just enough to get it around the rear tire of my bike to the seat post and secure it in a bike rack.

Hey all, need to get myself a bike lock for when I am riding to the gym, they have outdoor locks but its right outside the front entrance and it's CCTV'd so presume its safer and I'd also like it for when I need a quick refresh/break when out on a long ride in the Summer.

What are recommended locks for under £50?? It's not a fancy super bike or anything and it's 11 years old but does the job fine. Would rather not lose it to some toerag easily.

Cables don't seem worthwhile except maybe as a purely visual deterrent, bolt cutters will get through them in seconds.
Yeah seen those cables.
Doesn't seem any different between a cable tie and a cable lock. All they will stop is chancers.
Get some kind of D Lock with a big rating, cables can be cut through with a bolt cutter so are next to useless.

The only reason to carry a cable lock (or even a small chain), is in addition to your main D lock, in order to keep quick release wheels attached. (Realistically for security you would be better off changing the quick release skewers to standard bolts, but then that impacts convenience for yourself).

Generally it's all a trade off between how much it inconveniences yourself (i.e. having to carry a heavy D-Lock and also a very heavy chain for maximum protection), versus how much it inconveniences a would be crim.
Again if you can park next to a more desirable or easier to nick bike, you again sway the risk away from your bike (unfortunately to someone elses)

I use a Halfords U-Lock and a Yale chain and padlock.

There's a guy around here, before the lockdown, that rides a YT Jeffsy pro and leaves it locked to a small fence around a tree with two Poundland locks. **** knows how it's never been nicked as this place is considered quite dodgy, but it was there in the morning when I walked past it and it was still there later in the day. So either Poundland locks are immense value for the £1 or he simply doesn't give a ****.

Probably Ronnie Pickerings bike.

I can go one better than that. Was perusing the Facebook Marketplace to waste a bit of time and see if anything pops up, when I came across this advert asking for help with locating a stolen bike. I wonder how they managed to steal this when it was locked up with a U-Lock? :D

I see one now and then that is locked to a bollard in the High Street. Great you think, until you notice the bollard is 1m high and you can just lift bike + chain straight off :D:D

Just bought an Oxford Chain10 from Tredz with their usual £5 off and a wall anchor that I will chemical fix to the wall under my stairs to keep 2 bikes on Steadyracks hopefully secure.

two of these.
make sure you attach the wheels to the frame and the frame to something.
expect to pay about 5-10% of the value of the bike on locks.
MOST attacks for locks are low-skill (bolt cutters, grinders, hacksaws, taking the wheel off so you can take the rest of the bike away) but the lock itself is still important, you don't want something that someone can just open with a wave rake.
