I am after some good new fiction to read, something along the lines of sci fi/fantasy etc

Only read a few star trek books, and LOTR but interested in star wars books, warhammer and so on.....any other ideas?

Where do I start? Only mentioned these series as that's what I noticed in WH Smiths earlier! lol

Cheers

There's actually a book forum right here where questions like this have been answered loads of times.
However, my answer would probably be Robin Hobb's Farseer Trilogy, starting with Assassins Apprentice. It starts a little slowly, but a fantastic series. It gets even better if you read all three trilogies in sequence, Farseer trilogy, The Liveship Traders trilogy and the Tawny Man trilogy. Absolutely incredible fantasy.
For incredible fantasy/sci-fi, also try Gene Wolfe. His Book Of The New Sun series I would argue are the best books I've ever read.

How about some political party manifestos?

/sorry, couldn't resists..had to..

Seriously, Philip K Dick will blow your mind if you are into scifi.

Eddings' Belgariad, and Elenium. (Two different universes, and good reads).
Salvatore's Drizzt D&D novels are also well worth a look.

On the weightier end, you've got Jordan's Wheel of Time, and obviously Tolkein.

Sci-Fi, some of the expanded Star Wars stuff is actually pretty good, although it's been years since I've read any.

A Song of Ice and Fire if you want some low fantasy, or the Wheel of Time series if you're looking for more typical fantasy.

Well, after a mix of what you guys said, some of my own ideas and good prices, I bought:

Halo: The Fall of Reach
Darth Bane - Path of Destruction
The Shadow of the Torturer (The Book of the New Sun)

So these three will keep me busy for a while, and I have saved this thread for other ideas in the future then. Looking forward to reading through these now!

But which one to read first? haha
