good but cheap fileshare server solution

so.

office full of macs, currently there is a separate user on one of the main machines which everyone has access to holding, well, everything! files, repositories, data.

could anyone advise a slicker way to properly serve everything? we have so many problems with user rights and file ownership we just need a solid central place for the lot.

could get a mac mini server, but seems overkill for what we need.

any advice?

Small headless server with a couple of big disks attached. Run Linux on it and setup Samba.

I would say some sort of NAS box. This will do you local storage for peanuts. If it's important files you may need to look at a backup solution too. Don't forget this.
