Hi all

I am currently looking for a company that will host a domain and a simple pop3 email account @ said domain for me. The one I am currently leaning towards is "1and1.co.uk" as I have some previous experience of them and they seem to be quite reliable and not too expensive.

Basically I am after your experiences / recommendations of companies that will do this job for me. I know there are plenty around but I don't have a clue which are reliable and which are not.

Thanks in advance for any help

Hosting: tsohost/vidahost
Email: Use Google Apps (there is a 100% free version, the link is buried).

Pros: you get Gmail webmail, POP3/IMAP (far better than POP) access etc all from your domain.

I use to be with 1and1 but they are a real pain if you want to do some advanced domain options with MX records and the like. I use www.heartinternet.co.uk and would recommend them, easier to admin and they allow you to do more with the domain.

1and1 are terrible compared to some other web hosts. They are rather limited with that you can do. Are you looking for a UK based one or are you willing to host your website anywhere?

hostdime.co.uk are rather pricy, but there quality is generally pretty high in comparison to other hosts.

If you just want a domain host you can easily register on namecheap.com and get a years free email service (which is about £2 a year for emails). Their hosting is also on the cheap side too, but their servers are in the US.

I've used www.34sp.com for the last 10 years or so, quite expensive compared to some as they don't do a personal hosting service any more, but generally they've been very reliable for me, and quick to help with any issues I've had.

whats the link to the free google pop3 service ?

Guess i can just point the mx records of my mail domains to their servers ?

I think this is the link to the free version of google apps that was mentioned earlier:

Thanks for all the help by the way guys, some good suggestions here it would seem.

Also I note that the free version of google apps doesn't guarantee 99.9% uptime unlike the paid versions (see link). Is it safe to assume that this is not really a worry and it will be just as reliable as the regular gmail services which are up virtually all the time anyway?

I have been a customer of Heart Internet and they have always been very good. Bit more expensive than say godaddy but the hosting is a lot faster with better support and interface as well.

I have a quick question about the google apps. Their pricing page (see my earlier post) shows 10GB of 'email inbox size'. Is this per user or total shared across the 10 possible users (free version)? I assume it must be the former but just double checking as their wording is a little vague.
