Hi there,

I'm looking at getting a new CPU, primarily to run FSX. Im looking to be able to clock it up to around 4.0-4.2 GHZ.

Could any of you guys please suggest a good proc in the lower price range of those capable if at all possible?

Thanks,

Just out of curiosity, is the q6600 slow for you at that clock?

I only ask because my q6600 always felt sluggish to me even when I pushed it to 3.2GHz (won't go higher than that really), but I put an e5200 in yesterday and the system just doesn't seem to lag like it did with the quad, even at stock. Clocked the e5200 to 4GHZ and system was very responsive.

Now I know in games a higher dual will generally win out, but even windows vista feels more responsive. I have good components overall, so I am not sure why the system feels like it does. I had a quad some time back and am sure it never felt like this.

It's a hard thing to quantify...

EDIT: Never mind, jsut did all this rambling and realised the quad clock I was looking at was form the other person who responded :(

It's flawless in every game I play, so much to the point that I don't think a higher clocked dual would improve them. Vista is responsive, though not as much as I'd like, however this is a harddrive issue - I want raid 0 ;)

Thanks for the reply,

Is C0 a good stepping for overclocking the E8400/E3110?

Thanks

E8400 without a doubt.

I managed to get mine to run at 4.2ghz (same volts), but as you will see from my signature, I run mine at 4.1ghz all day.

Crikey! I never used a stable computer that was faster than 3400MHz :o

I wonder if the difference between 3000MHz and 4000MHz is noticable in actual use? outside of benchmarks of course!

Gunrunner, what are your temps like with that clock on the freezer? what volts you running through it?

Max temp under load when flying Flight Sim is around 58 C with 1.33 v. If I keep raising the voltage, I can get as high as 4.5ghz, but I dont see any point in staying that high. 4.1ghz is fine for me all day (I can get 4.2 ghz with same volts), especially as I get exceptionally high frame rates in my Flight Sim game using SLI.

Just upgraded just for this purpose (FSX). E8500 E0 stepping, which are available at the moment but it's not a certainty. Got to 4Ghz easily, but now finding big temp leaps as I approach 4.2Ghz.

What are your other system specs (mobo/RAM)? That will help us figure out if the E8400 or E8500 would be a better bet.

When I had the machine at 4.2Ghz, I finally got decent FPS at JFK with most of the sliders to the right (15 avg). Not perfect, but no longer a headache inducing slideshow.
