Howzit guys,

I just lost 500gbs worth of stuff on an external HDD. What program can I use to get the data back? Don't mind paying for it either.

Thanks

Software best = File Scavenger.

If HDD is physically buggered then FREEZING it may help (need take out of caddy and get in a airtight Ziplock bag, I advise a bag or Reactivated Silica Gel in there too).

I got 15mins at a time doing that so it took a few days to get 100GB back, HDD would freeze PC when warm and after I got all data back the WD Tools told me the My Book had bad sectors.

The drive is fine. It just suffered a damaged partition table. Will try the above.

Thanks guys! :)

Cool - the data should be recoverable with a bit of luck. I've had good results in the past from Ontrack's Easyrecovery Professional. Just another option to try if you like.

By trying different software on the drive ( Not writing any data and I haven't written any data to the drive ) will it damage the files more each time?

no it wont - as long as you have a second disk to recover to. Best way is to avoid writing to the problem disk in any way - this could lessen the chances of recovery. After you get your data on the second disk you can nuke the problem disk and copy it back.

Yes, that's what I am doing. I have a second 500GB here that I copy from the problem disk. Looks like this File Scavenger might work. I will kill the floor and helmutcheese's feet if it works!

You're right. I am trying that now. I just found out if I select Disk 1 instead of D: drive, I getter results, so rescanning the drive.

But lets just say, File Scavenger doesn't work. It gets the files and their names/sizes. But files don't play...then what?

Thanks. :)

As per MasterLuke, Ontrack EasyRecovery Pro got my data back off a RAID setup I had which decided to wipe rather than rebuild when a disk was replaced. Managed to recover 300GB+ back.

I still like Recover my files, has a neat option if u have lost the partition/tables or its corrupted the partition it can still do a quick scan and it can find your files in the same file system u left it :)

Ive tried Easy recovery pro and while good not anyware as good as Recovery my files in terms of recovery/easy of use.

Do LONG SEARCH and also let it look in Deleted Files, it WILL work and unlike some other Apps you get the Full File Name and Location saved to a folder so its easy to put back where it was.

Many App's are simply to recover a file you made a boob of and deleted, this software is for recovering from a totalled HDD (not Physically damaged), that inc's Windows nuked or File System gone inc a HDD appearing as RAW (mines after Mobo Fried).

use test disk,

fixes partition tables

had this fix about 10 drives in total, failed once on a mac drive
