Ideally would like to spend no more than £50 if possible. Must be/have: gigabit, good wifi range, decent amount of RAM.

Any suggestions please? Thanks.

Also interested if anyone has any suggestions.

So far my googling has brought up the tp-link TL-WR1043ND which seems pretty good for £40.

I recently got a Linsys E1000 router and easily got the DD-WRT firmware on it.
The E1000 dosent have gigabit LAN but the next model, the E2000 does. I dont think it will be in your price range of £50 though, I think the E2000 is about £70ish.

I have one of these with DD-WRT on it. I don't use any of the advanced features but it has never caused me any hassle doing the basic stuff.

Anything you would like to know about it?

Thanks but I bought it anyway, it arrived today. Couldn't get N running at full speed with DD-WRT and it appears there are issues judging from the forum plus question marks over usb port support.

I've got openWrt up and running on it now which runs fine at 40mhz ht, just need to configure the usb support and a few other bits and bobs.
