Good decision?

Looking to upgrade from AMD phenom x4 940 @ 3ghz DDR2
and go for an overclocked bundle, i3 @ 4 ghz DDR3

i literally only use the computer for gaming and simulation based programs also (Flight sim x)

good decision or perhaps with a bit more cash go for the i5 ?

i3 would be a sidestep. FSX uses 4 cores so either upgrade to an i5 or better wait for Sandy Bridge/Bulldozer. Can't you overclock that Phenom above 3GHz?

I'm in a similar situation, got the Phenom 920, considering a move over to the newer Intel chips, although I think I'll bypass the i3 and go for an i5 if I do make the move.

Invest in a decent cooler (if you dont alreay have one) and overclock your 940, save your money for Sandybridge or Bulldozer.

Also increasing the speed of Northbridge does help with improving the performance of the Phenom II AFAIK.

dont bother with the i3. i5 760 (or other i5 quads) or i7 930 and higher if you go intel for FSX.
