It may take me like 4 months or more to afford a kick butt CPU like a 4400+ or a 175 opty. I've been thinking of getting a cpu like a AMD 64 3700 so I can use my PC while I save my pennys. :D

Do any of you guys think this is a good idea or have ever done things like this in the past?

Going against most, i think you should buy a cheap processor for now. You have a good rig there and theres no point in paying a lot of money for it and letting it sit going to waste mate, just get a 3000+ and clock it to tide you over till you have more money to upgrade it.

probably.... but you would also get 2.4ghz+ with the 165. Think the average must be 2.6/2.7 as long as your board can go the distance - but 300 shouldnt be too hard :)

I suggest buying a cheap temp, instead of going without a cpu for 3 months. It doesnt make sense to let the rest of the system go to waste for so long.

Believe me I want to save but I've been without a PC for months now and it's tearing me apart. I guess any hardcore gamer that has to go with out their PC for ages will know what I'm going through. I'm getting the shakes. :D

I could get the 3000 and save for a few months I bet I could get £50 for it on MM when I done with it as it'll only be a few months old.

thats my advice mate, its your choice if you think you can go for another few months. even if you have to wait a bit onger to afford the 3800, at least you have a cpu in there and working.

That is what I was thinking. If I have something keeping me going I might be able to save for an even better CPU like a 4400 or am opty 180 because I won't be bored out of my tidy mind.

I've noticed the dif between a retail 3000+ and an oem 3200 is pennies. I might get that to tide me over.

I just hope I can see F.E.A.R. as it was intended this time. :D

You could buy second hand if you want to save some more, it should be ok if you're only keeping it for a few months.

I agree; the last cpu I got from the MM was a retail 3000 winchester @£60 inc. which does 2.5GHz on stock volts.

Could I get 2.4Ghz out of a 3000+ on air?

I was using a 3000+ while i was waiting for my new 4800 to come, took it up too 2020 before it started getting a bit flakey but that was with a crappy HSF setup and i could have pushed it a bit furher but didnt bother going to far as it was only for a week.

2.4 might be possible, depends on the chip and how good your air cooling is.

I bought a retail 3200 for 108 pounds It's may be a low end cpu but there's still a big difference between that and my old 2.8Ghz northwood. Well that and the fact im not using a 9800pro any more.

I think that old 9800 pro was a great card.
