Hi All,

Anyone know a good electric guitar to buy for around £200 to learn on?.

No preference to music type, i intend to just plug it into the PC and play rocksmith :D

If i start enjoying it i will upgrade the guitar :D

I was looking around and have seen these:

Ibanez GRGA42T - w/EMG Pickups for £200

and

Ibanez SA160FM-TGB for £175

Both pre-owned. They seem fairly good????

Thank you for the quick replies.

I got a pretty much mint condition Epiphone Les Paul Standard Cherry Sun Burst for £180 to upgrade from a cheap fender copy I started with. I get on really well with it.

I started on an ibanez grga42t lovely guitar. I've stuck with ibanez since then with bare knuckle pickups (hmm soo lovely :D).

Best advise is to try them both or get yourself down a guitar shop try as many as possible as what feels right for one person may be hell for another.

I think i am going to go for the Ibanex GRGA42T after seeing some reviews on it.

There's two pre-owned very good condition for £200 each.

One has EMG Pickups and the other has the standard ones. I am right in assuming to go for the EMG pickups one?

Yeah don't send him out for the standard Pacifica, the bog standard models are crap.

I'd also go for a Mexican strat or a epiphone les Paul (which is what I've got).

We can all recommend brands until the starts come home, but the best piece of advice you could get is just to try some out. I was looking for a cheap acoustic with a smooth Unlacquered neck, and found one for £80. Granted there were much better ones in the shop, but it was the way it felt that I wanted, and that's what will encourage you to keep playing.

If you have friends who have guitars, maybe try them out first in the comfort of your/there homes.

The problem I had when looking for a first guitar was how do you play something, other than holding it and plucking a few strings when you have just started and have no idea what you are looking for?

I went to several music shops and messed around but everything was completely over my head and I had no idea what I was doing. People in the shops attempting to recommend things doesn't really help either as everything they say is yet to have any real context.

Once you start using one a lot you can find out what you do and don't like about it, but the first one you go for is always going to be a bit hit and miss I think.

I remember when I bought my first guitar 2 years ago, I originally went in to buy a Pacifica like the whole internet recommends, but I also ended up trying out an Epiphone Les Paul, which I ended up buying. It was a bit awkward, as you say, since I had no idea how to play guitar, so I was sat in the sound booth just plucking random strings :D. I went with the Epi since it felt more substantial than the Pacifica, and the bands I like use Les Pauls.

Pacifica, make sure it has H-S-S configuration, one humbucker, two single coils, just to leave dynamic range/style open for the future.

Thank you for all the advice.

I went for the Ibanez GRGA42T - w/EMG Pickups preowned for £199. After reading and seeing some good reviews on it.

I have since been informed that the guitar has been damaged in the shop. They are offering to discount the guitar to £169 (its a tiny impact). Or offering to get me a brand new Ibanez GRGA42T at the price of £199 (what i originally payed).

Should i go for this Ibanez or the yahama?

It seems quite a good deal for a new one at £199 but prices on the guitars are soo hard to get.

Yamaha Pacifica

Agreed.

Whatever you go for, ensure it has a hum-bucker in the bridge. This means a 'double sized' pick-up (a pick-up is the electronic part that picks up the string vibrations), which sounds nice and beefy. It's a sound typically associated with rock music and will give you variety. Here's a picture of a guitar that has a bridge humbucker (the big pick-up out of the three) so you can see what they look like.
