Good engineering books / resources?

If it's mechanical engineering as per your other thread and you haven't delved into books in a while I'd read up on maths (ka Stroud was recommended at my uni too), and maybe thermodynamics (cos it's a ******* hard course!)

I'm not an engineer but if I were you I'd get a maths book (perhaps one aimed at engineering students). You could make sure you're **** hot at calculus, ODEs etc.. before you start the course then you can focus more on the applications when you're doing the course. Tis probably a bit pointless to do much with regards to any particular domain related knowledge right now.

Stroud is the go to, central to everything, engineering book really. That's one of the few must have books regardless of discipline.

Modern Engineering Mathematics by G James is also good and probably a bit easier to get into.

I think I've got both kicking around somewhere.

As everyone else has said Stroud is excellent, however pretty much just maths rather than any engineering topics.

Shigley's Mechanical Engineering Design is a pretty good book but not too cheap to purchase on a whim.

Come to think of it I think I used Glenn (?) James one rather than Stroud... Altho I generally read very few books in uni.. :o
(just lecture notes)

You want to find the reference books and buy them (usually only two or three), the rest you either won't need or you can get from the library if you do.

Never fall into the trap of buying too many books! So now if you just want to start with a general understanding buy one general engineering book if it exists. Should give you a good start.

Some fantastic replies as always, much appreciated folks :)

Looks like I'll be visiting the library this weekend. I can barely remember what a library looks like

You'll also get free access to the OU's academic library, and it's links to other libraries. They do induction sessions live every year, and the recorded segments are posted on the OU's VLE. Check your message inbox there. Might save you a few quid/some effort.

But in London you're spoilt for choice as far as libraries are concerned, so shouldn't be a problem either way.

Cheers Jack. I've got Clapham library about 7 minutes drive from me which is quite a good one, just refurbished a couple of years ago so that should meet my needs hopefully.
