Can anyone suggest any good free games? Not really interested in the in the browser facebook kinda games. I'm thinking oldschool / legal abandonware like Red Alert or GTA 1 or 2? Or newer indie games, or maybe games in beta? Got lots of free time but I don't really want to spend any more money on Steam...

Lotro is amazing, you could lose your life in it without paying a penny.

Also Tribes Ascend, although I found the emphasis on grinding was a tad extreme...basically having to pay real money if you wanted to unlock items at anything approaching a decent rate.
