Good G/C for a flightsims.

Sorry for the OT, just wondering if you had any personal screenies of your card doing it?

There's only one of us getting upset here mate, and it certainly aint me :D

My X1800XT came bundled with Pacific Fighters - SM3.0 is on all ATi X1x00 cards.

I know, but AFAIK, SM3.0 water cannot be enabled. Try it and post screenies (Genuine request, not having a go m8)

So you dont get major frame dropping then when you have lots of ac and ships firing flak when using water = 3 because my gt cant cope its fine for screenshots.

640x480 would be fine i would have thought?
20fps is fine for some people as well remember. its all personal preference

Yes, i definitely got major FPS drop when things got busy with my 6600GT, especially getting too close to that beautifull water :D

You don't generally get that close to water in an airliner unless you're crashing. Me mate is only really interested in civil stuff, B777 and B747, the aircraft we work on, so its mainly takeoff, landing, and high altitude stuff following a flight plan, etc. I've told him about BF2 and he's quite enthusiastic about trying out the helicopter as well.
I must admit I'm leaning towards the X1800 of some variant, seeing as I'm the one who's gonna be setting it up for him, and I'm more familiar with ATI stuff than Nvidia, although the 7900 range looks promising performance wise, though not cost wise until the prices drop.

As a keen FS9 simmer myself, i would highly recommend the x850xt or above for 1280x1024. I run at 1280x960 with everything maxed out (including AA/AF) with lots of addons that really can bring a system down on its knees and the game plays wonderfully.

Anything above that probibly won't come in handy because 1) You are CPU limitated and 2) The game fps should be locked at around 30fps to aid in the loading of ground textures when not in view, so having that extra oomph won't always come in handy. ;)

I will do. Is the game any good - I generally like that genre but just wondering? Might install it after this post as I only got it on Tuesday with my card.

Anyway, the X1800's are amazing value for money at the moment. The 7900GT seems about on par but costs more. I saw one guy with a 7900GT Extreme edition and he was getting about 9800 stock 3DMark05 which is what I got with a stock X1800XT 512MB (same clocked CPU's). But, this was an extreme vs a stock X1800XT and the 7900GT only has 256MB RAM as opposed to my 512MB and cost the same so I know which I'd rather have....or actually have.

Buy what ever Marshy has - think he is a hardcore flightsim freak :p

Aha, FS2004, Very easy to answer this one with 3 letters ,ATI ,Obviously we're talking high end cards here & personally I would aim for X1800 minimum as it'll absolutly destroy any Nvidia card for smoothness & above all for me IQ ,I can't comment on the new 7900's as I haven't got one but my systems have had both 7800GTX & X1900's . Don't get me wrong Nvidia cards will run it smoothly but just look tatty compared to ATI as to get a nice image very high levels of AA & AF are required which cripple performance.

For the future with regard FSX (new Flightsim due summer/Autumn) you'll want a dual core CPU & either SLI or Crossfire to run max detail & when you finish with the add-on's that I have I'll probably cripple that too:eek:.

Anyway for top IQ which you'll get with lower AA & AF settings go ATI for FS2004 , simply no contest m8:)

Well, the Marshy has spoken.

In that case, the X1800XT 256MB for £217 or the 512MB for £252 are the 'budget' options or you could get an ATi X1900XT-X for £346.

Cheers for that mate, I'll try and talk him round to an X1800XT, at least the prices are good atm. I don't know if he'll go for a 512meg card, but at least 256meg should be ok.

Couldn't agree more & if you have the budget go with the 512MB card , there is a considerable performance gain in scenery areas with heavy autogen & the extreme demands of VFR & MegaScenery add-on's:).

I personally found that VFR/photoreal scenery requires more CPU power than anything. The same with autogen to be honest. I doubt even 256mb of video memory is used with virtually every addon going so i wouldn't go for a 512mb unless he can afford it and doesnt plan on upgrading for a long time. (Which chances are he will due to FSX requiring Vista & a DX10 complacient video card to go with it to play it how it was meant to be played so to speak)

OT: Marshy - Have you seen the autogen with Ground Enviroment with 1.04 update? Looks fantasic with FSGlobal and UT. Autogen has been placed a lot more realistically and the results have to be seen to be believed! :)
