good games from 2001-2006

The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind

Both have plenty of mods to make them look prettier, and add extra functionality and life to them.

F.E.A.R. Mission Pack: Extraction Point (2006)
Tomb Raider: Legend (2006)

I'd add Progect IGI to the list. OK, it came out in the middle of December 2000, but seeing as how it's one of the best PC games ever I reckon we can overlook a couple of weeks.

(MS) Train Simulator (2001).
Spawned a massive content creation community which is still fairly active today, albeit the sim struggles with modern hardware and O/S unless you follow very strict guidelines re installation.

Outlaw Golf (2003) was an absolute blast too, took the yellow stuff out of the more strait-laced golf games but at the same time managed to offer quite a technical challenge.

Flight Sim 9 and FSX already mentioned but worth a reprise.

Good one! Expansion was released in June 2001 so definitely counts. ;)

Probably the game I've put most hours into of all. Not sure it's aged well though or would be as fun today.

Indeed, the amount of re-playability in that game is immense.
If you haven't tried the Median XL mod and have time to spare I also recommend - it was a few years back when I played it but it was actually quite fun.

Just thought of another...
Darkstar One (2006). Not sure what happened to my copy but ISTR similar to Freelancer and you had to collect artifacts to progressively enhance the ship. Don't think it works on > Win XP though.

It was a 2000 game, but the expansion was released in 2001, so I'm mentioning it here.

Rune.

Cracking bit of fun. Based on Norse mythology, it's a third person melee action game built with the Unreal Engine. How you moved when attacking with weapons, position of the weapon, etc, determined what attack was done and how it'd affect the enemy (dismemberment etc.) Anything dropped by a dead opponent can be used, so weapons, items such as torches, and yes, body parts. That you had just lopped off moments before.

Excellent game sadly only discovered it last year, still people online.

Need for Speed: Most Wanted (2005) - great NFS game I played a lot at the time. And recently was free on Origin!

  • Championship Manager: Season 01/02
  • Championship Manager 4
  • Championship Manager: Season 03/04
  • Football Manager 2005
  • Football Manager 2006

Soldiers: Heroes of->Faces of->Men of, that's what I would call a rechristening. Is that what you meant?

I'm not sure actually; I just remember having it on Windows 98(?) or possibly XP, then it didn't want to work at all when I upgraded to XP/7, and I was sad.
It was an awesome game. Loved it way more than Commandos.

I know Final Fantasy 7/8 were late 90s, but I was addicted to those 2 games in 2001 :-) The Sims also in 2001.

In 2002, I mainly played Popcap games like Bejeweled, Big Money, Mummy Maze etc.

2004 - Star Wars Galaxy.

2005/6 - World of Warcraft.
