I have a netgear 10/100 24 port switch and wanting to upgrade to something a bit more managed so I can check bandwidth on ports and manage bandwidth. I am wanting to upgrade to gigabit too, I have seen a few netgear ones as do not want to spend a great amount as there is about 10 computers connected at a time in the office but quite a few iphone/ipads connected to the wireless access points. does anyone know something good that would be suitable for me ?

What are the issues you're trying to solve? Unless you have very specialised requirements a managed switch is overkill for 10 clients. And in the world of enterprise switching, netgear are cheap, a good managed switch is expensive and needs expertise to get the best out of.

That said, if it's a pure 10/100 ssitch getting the server onto gigabit should make a big difference.

The NetGear ProSafe E (note the E i.e. GS108E) line are ok for a cheaper managed switch - monitoring is fairly rudimentary though, bandwidth management is in fairly large steps i.e. 0, 512Kbit/s, 1Mbit, 2Mbit, 4Mbit and so on. Has support for VLANs and basic QoS (port or 802.1p/DSCP based).

EDIT: Obviously managing wireless clients is another matter again though.

How many gigabit ports do you need? you could pick up a Cisco 2900 series switch with 2 x gigabit ports and the rest FastEthernet, if you want all gigabit ports though be prepared to spend more if you want Cisco

What features are you using for 10 clients that you require managed switching?
