evening,

as in the title, anyone know of any decent (doesn't have to be cheap) Mexican restaurants in central London area?

around convent garden area :)

Definitely Wahaca! I'd go to the branch in Soho though (Wardour st.) as it has a bar downstairs where you can wait for your table. The CG one doesnt and you end up standing on the stairs like a lemon for 45mins. The CG one is also a bit busier due to the tourist factor.

I've also been to Cantina Laredo, which I did enjoy although it is more pricey. It's more aimed at 'gourmet' Mexican whereas Wahaca is more street food (and has the busy/noisy atmosphere to go with it).

I've been meaning to try Mestizo as it's supposed to be very good. It's even more pricey than CL though by the looks of it.. it does sell itself as Mexican 'fine dining' but the food looks amazing.

My vote goes to Cafe Pacifico. I remember accidentally discovering it one cold November evening, whilst trying to find my way to Seven Dials, and found myself in the midst of a massive Day of the Dead celebration.

Many margaritas, nachos and tacos later, I emerged into the Covent Garden night feeling extremely chuffed I'd found such an amazing little restaurant by accident. A lot has probably changed since then, but I'd give it another go in a heartbeat.

Another vote for Cafe Pacifico.

I am liking their menu. their food sounds amazing.

Wahaca is to good Mexican what Wagamamas is to good Japanese. It's more fast food/quick lunch than a decent restaurant.
Totally disagree. Unless it's changed vastly since I was last there, cafe pacifico is great, but its still your bog standard tex mex. Wahaca as far as I believe (not having been to Mexico, mind) is far closer to true Mexican food. Yes, its layout and 'street food' vibe makes it more akin to wagamama than a true 'restaurant'.. but that's just aesthetics tbh..

Wahacas food tastes nothing like your generic tex mex; its miles better.

Tbf Mexican food is hardly spectacular food anyway, the best Mexican food is the fast lunch style stuff IMHO.

Go to chipotle for a burrito! More fast food than restaurant, but still so tasty. Used to eat there all the time in the states

They've recently opened a Chipotle on Baker Street, near where I work. Went there the other day.
Decent burritos, but Poncho No 8 is better. Unfortunately I'm not near any of them anymore, so it's not an option for lunch these days.

I'd agree with that I've spent quite a lot of time in Mexico and Wahaca is very authentic and nice quality. It is street food and by that definition it is fast and casual but it is not fast food. I worked in a typical tex mex UK restaurant years ago and that is quite a different deal - yuch.

On the recommendation of this thread I went to Wahaca (Stratford) last night... Was delicious - Both my partner and I enjoyed the whole experience (including the layout, etc). Ended up getting five different 'street foods' and the sweet potato side (yum!). A few beers and dessert to share... Lovely! Would definitely go again... However, I'm also keen to try out Cafe Pacifico as the other recommendation here. :)

Yay, another convert! :p

I actually ended up going to Cafe Pacifico on Wednesday. Planned to catch up with my Dad not realising it was Day of the Dead. Oops! It was rather lively :p

It was good fun (besides the fact that I work nights so was off to work afterwards!) but I definitely stand by my opinion that Wahaca's food is far, far superior.

not quite central (depending on your definition) but Taqueria on westbourne grove is really good. food, drinks etc all better than wahaca although it is pricier.
