Just got the new HP 30" ZR30W and this monitor has no OSD so things have to be configured through software, so i need some good calibration software that allows me to adjust colour, contrast, gamma and so on...

So whats any good? The more options it has the better, dont want anything basic.

Cheers...

Well I know Windows 7 has a monitor calibration tool. It works quite well - though can't remember off-hand how much you can tweak things. It does rely on your own judgement.

For something like your screen I would try and get hold of a proper calibration device. There is one doing the rounds in the Monitor forum.

The i1 Display2 calibrator is good and can be bought new from auction at a decent price. This is the same hardware unit that is used in the LaCie Blue Eyed Pro calibration package.

The LaCie Blue Eyed Pro is often used by reviewers.

I will probably get hardware to do it, but for now i just want some more advanced options and finer tuning than what ATI's typically poor software allows. It has to be done through software as this monitor has no OSD to calibrate this stuff... so i'd like software with individual colour channel adjustment, gamma, contrast, and temperature adjustment.

Do all the hardware calibrators come with software that allows you to change all this? of just software that displays how accurately it's configured?

Seriously, a 30" monitor which I imagine cost a fair bit doesn't have an OSD for tweaking?

Typically the software that comes with these devices just tell you what to tweak - on the assumption you have an OSD. The ATI colour controls should also be good enough for this. Some devices may come with software with colour controls, but I have only used two and both assumed an OSD.

I also thought that it seemed strange that such a high end monitor did not have an OSD menu. In fact, it is unbelievable that HP have left this out.

Just had a google on the lack of OSD and it seems this was a deliberate choice by HP and the OSD has been replaced vy "Direc Drive" which in theort links the monitor directly to the graphics card.

Apparently the same approach is used by the Dell 3007WFP monitor and the Apple 24" Cinema Display model so they cant all be wrong.

Awesome monitor OP, wish it was mine.

The ATi drivers will let you tweak - I had to use them when calibrating one of my two Dell monitors as the OSD didn't go high enough on one of the colour settings.

Word to the wise: avoid pairing two monitors that are about 2 years apart with their revisions! :p

Yeah some higher end monitors actually dont have an OSD and i knew it didn't have one before buying. But OSD's dont normally have all the tweaking options i'd like anyway so not that bothered about it. An OSD isn't really needed anyway if you think about it, not with physical buttons and DDC that most new monitors have. Would be an issue if connecting another source though like a game console.

I've also got a Dell 3008, and the HP is very very slightly better with image quality, but the Dell has OSD + Card Read + More connections, so they're equal i'd say.

@SiriusB - tried ATI drivers for this, but they're too limited and dont allow small enough increments for my liking.
