Hi guys,

I have and old Athlon XP 2500 and I'm thinking about a cheap(ish) upgrade.

I was looking at the AMD Athlon 64 3000+ Socket 939 512KB Inc Fan

Could someone please recommend me a good motherboard to sit it on? It has been a good couple of years since I last upgraded my PC and I am now totally out of touch with the technologies...

Many Thanks,

Adam

I have an Athlon 64 3000+ Overclocked to 2.4ghz on a MSI K8N neo4 motherboard. Its a decent board, and can get a htt of up to 315ish, but there are a few things that bug me about the board. The layout is the main one, as there is a row of capacitors right next to the CPU bracket, that make it really hard to fit my Artic Cooler64 HSF. Overall though, its a nice board, although if I was to buy one now, i'd probably go for a DFI board.

Thanks for all the replies guys, hmmm... AGP or PCI-E? good question...Well I have an ATI X800 AGP card at the moment but I would like to have the option to go PCI-E later (is this possible on the same board and if it is, does it severely limit my choices board-wise?)

Also, I am fairly sure I am not interested in overlocking it. 'was thinking of spending about £60-70.. will this be enough?

Another question I need to ask you; I also need to replace my PSU as the current one I have is a cheap and cheerful job and I am amazed it runs what it does and that it has lasted so long.. what sort of money should I spend here to replace this and what spec to run the above CPU + appropriate board, 1GB mem, ATI x800 AGP, etc?

Right......

This is what i would go for:

Gigabyte K8NSC-939 nForce3 250GB (Socket 939) Motherboard (MB-036-GI) £52.82

AND

Tagan TG420-UO2 420W I-XEYE ATX2.0 Silent PSU (CA-003-TG) £51.64

OR

Enermax Noisetaker 370W EG375AX-VE(G) SFMA ATX2.0 PSU (CA-005-EN) £39.89

PSU dependant on what you would prefer to spend!

And keep your current grapihcs card and then if you want to move to pci-e in the near future just get a pci-e board or even an sli capable one otherwise your choices are going to be very limited
