Looks like X-Fi owners are in luck. Creative have said that they are working on drivers to allow for EAX in Vista with DirectSound. Supposedly the driver intercepts the DirectSound signal, converts it to OpenAL on the fly and then adds processing effects to it. I'm not quite sure if that means there will be some sort of performance hit (DirectSound to OpenAL conversion can't be that easy). Full story here.
