There are a huge amount of free to play ones on the market.
First port of call is mmohut.com and have a look through their lists to see which ones look appealing. Forsaken World is pretty decent and Loong looks alright too.
I also can't recommend League of Legends enough, it's an arena based 5v5 (or 3v3 - but it's far less popular) team game where you duke it out to smash the oponents bases. If you've played or seen the Warcraft mod dota you'll know exactly what I mean, if not the best way I can summarise it is, it's an mmoprg of sorts but compacted into 20-60minute battles
Edit: Like the guy above Eve is an insanely good mmorpg with the best skill/levlling system and market I've ever seen. Content is pretty much completely player driven with the developers launching constant free ad-ons. Played this for about 4/5years and really got into, I would still be playing it now if I had the time to dedicate to it!
My brothers have recently started to play Final Fantasy XI online, i've not had much of a look at it, but they were really into WoW and seem to like this, could be a shout?
