My son's 5th birthday is coming up and will be getting him a bike. I was looking at a Frog bike but at £200 it is quite steep for a first bike. I will nip down to my LBS and see what they recommend but has anyone got any recommendations at a cheaper price? Are Halfords a good option?

You get what you pay for.
I've bought one Halfords bike for my son when he was 3 and it was rubbish. The brakes were impossible to adjust and never worked, other bolts were made of cheese and the bike generally was very heavy.

Spend a bit more for a decent bike and when it's finished with sell it on - if you have a decent brand you will get 60-70% of the price back.

Check out my thread last year for suggestions.

Halfords are ok...but only if you're going to spend £200 on their Carrera range. The cheaper Apollo ones (as we bought for my son't first bike) are just terrible.

My boy's second bike actually was a Carrera. But we picked one up from ebay for £50 in nearly new condition. Much better.
