Good printers for ink consumption

Hello,

I've started Uni in Sept and since then I've got through 4 black ink cartridges and I can't afford to keep buying them as they're around £7 a piece.

The printer I've got is an Epson Stylus SX110,

And basically what I'm looking for is a better ink consumption printer whether it be an ink jet or laser printer, I mainly print in black and white and I need something that will last and not use up an ink cartridge in a week.

Many thanks :)

If you aren't afraid of a little modding look up Continuous Ink Supply Systems (CISS) they can work out very very cheap printing! You may even be able to get one for your printer!

I got a brother 7030 laser printer/scanner/copier, remanufactured "3000 page" cartridges cost me £14 delivered.

B/W printing only but tbh colour is unwanted and generally unnecessary round here.

Quite large mind you and it's a lot more than your ink printer to start off with.

Kodak printers have the cheapest ink I have seen. Not sure if it lasts longer but it is certainly cheaper.

I've heard a lot about Kodak printers but need to find out how long the ink lasts, I'll have to ask my friend as he has one I think

Does the toner last a lot longer? and does it last for the full 3000 pages? or thereabouts?

The quoted number of pages is usually based on something like 5% coverage of the paper, which is perhaps a page of text.

If you printed out full A4 size pictures (100% coverage for arguments sake) then a "3,000 page" cartridge would only produce 150 pages.

Okay thanks :)

I think my best bet is to get a laser printer with just a black toner as it seems like it'll be the most cost worthy in the long run and I don't print in colour much or print many pictures so I should be fine :)

Have a fish about and make sure whatever you get is popular enough to have a good supply of remanufactured toner cartridges, saves a fair bit on the official toner cartridges.

If you get something with a brand new incompatible-with-anything-else cartridge you will be stuck with just the choice of official refills.

hi frozo i have a load of the T0711(black), as the GF prints loads of photos and stuff and uses a lot more colour than black, send me a pm and we could come to a arrangement?

Sorry to hijack this thread, but I'm in the same position as the OP (starting a degree) and need a good consumption B/W printer.

I've had a look around and seen the Samsung ML-1660 at various places for £39.

I know it is probably entry level, but for student use, is it a decent printer for the money?

Yes great nice and quiet too. You can get toner top up and chips off eBay for about £10 :) last forever

If you have an epson SX110 just get compatibles.

You can easily get them for less than £1 each if you shop around, thats for black or colour.

I've run printers on cheap ink for years.
