So far I've been using avidemux to do basic stuff, like filtering, resizing, transcoding etc. But it's not the most convienient program to use, it doesn't support any kind of effects and often it's preview output doesn't represent what it looks like when played back.

Can anyone recommend a good program for video editing, one that doesn't cost £1k would be preferable. :p

I've checked Vegas Movie Studio HD 11 on the sony website, but it says it doesn't support primary and secondary colour correction, what does this mean? No colour curves?

Nevermind I can see in the trials it does support basic features like colour curve editing.

Thanks for the recommendation, it's certainly a great step up from the program I'm using now.

could anyone be kind enough to post a link for this please?

I bought mine from that online shop that sells just about everything, and therefore can't be named as it's classed as a competitor. A quick Google should sort it. The full product name is 'Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum Production Suite 11', and it's currently £34. There's a slightly cheaper version that doesn't include 'Production Suite' in the title, but the cost difference is pennies.
