Shadow warrior.albeit I like using the sword a bit more than the guns. Or Hard Reset by the same devs. Both somewhat old school, much like the games in the OP.

Also, Rise of the Triad (2013) sounds like another throwback game, with some interesting mechanics.

I have just purchased Hard Reset it is 99p in the steam sale and comments suggest its a headless shooter like Serious Sam. I've not checked any external reviews or even played it yet to pass judgement but steam feedback is averaged at Very Positive and Metacritic 73/100. It's from 2012 so Graphics still look decent and for a quid it's not going to be disheartening if its absolute tosh!

Nation Red on Steam. It's stupidly addicting with pickups each level and plenty of weapon drops, isometric zombie shooter. It's fairly basic but gets quite tough.

A slower paced suggestion would be something like Doom 3 or Quake 4.
