I've done a search but all the threads I can see seem to relate to routers, wireless etc....

I'm moving out and taking my modem with me but my parents are keeping the ADSL connection so all they need a simple stable ADSL modem.

What would people recommend?

It'll just have one computer attached and it will be wired. Probably looking to spend not more than £40/£50 really, as I think that should be sufficiant for one.

Why get just a modem? You'll pay about the same for an ethernet ADSL modem as you would for a router, and with a router you have some protection from other people on the internet because of NAT.

Netgear DG834 would be worth a look.

Mainly because I thought that it would be quite a bit cheaper for a modem alone. I mean he doesn't spending a reasonalbe amount on one because it'll prob be the only one he ever buys, but just nothing to excessive.

Cheers for the suggestion. Are netgears quite stable now? I remember when I was looking for one that the software was always the thing that let it down.

Also, by what your saying do just the routers not provide any firewall protection like routers do?

If you just need a modem for one computer then I would suggest buying a second hand one BT speedtouch one or something similar, they can be had for around £5 or sometimes less.

 Do you mean do modems not provide any firewall protection like routers do? Nope, none whatsoever.

I've got 25 or so Netgear DG834's rolled out around the company and they don't give me any problems, a quick check one one shows that it has been up since we did the firmware updates.

You could just get a cheap crappy USB modem but I wouldn't as quiote frankly, USB is crap for networking. Ethernet was designed for it, USB wasn't.

Agreed that Ethernet is much better for networking but if only one computer is be using the connection it seems like an unnecessary expensive IMO.

I disagree. Even for a single PC I'd always go down the ethernet route over USB.

Lol, yeh bit of a typo!

Ok router it is then. Don't really want to go down the second route either.

And like I said, he'll only be buying once so he'd rather splash a bit more for something good and not have to replace it rather than a cheapy thing and it go wrong/break!
