good sites linking to x, but google doesn't see them

my friends site is currently linked to by many good relevent sites, one example being yell.com, but oddly when checking the webmaster tools for them, google only has one site linking to the homepage. i have checked and checked and know for sure that there is many sites with direct links to this persons site, so i am completely lost as to why google only has it as one person is linking to it.

The site has been running for years so it can't be that google haven't updated yet.

any ideas why this could be?

Does yell.com let google crawl? I thought directory sites were not permitted? (I am probably completely wrong though!)

Are you sure his site is actually linked from Yell? My business is listed on there but there is no site link, just contact details and a description. Don't you have to pay to have a direct link to your site? Certainly that's the case with TouchLocal.

that would suck if true, i always thought one part of their advertising was that pay to be on our site and you'll be higher on google etc. i would have thought also as when googling the company that as yell is on the results page that google must be crawling it?

yeah definetly linked to from it which yes has been paid for. also many other sites as linking right back to the website. if i google the persons site then i find lots of results for the exact website address, but then put link: infront and only one result.
