Does anyone know if there are any decent space shooters out recently games, like freelancer, tachyon the fringe, descent freespace etc?
Thanks in advance :)

X3 is very good (but must patch it!) Very in depth game, building your own fleets, factories, complex's. Or just kill things.

Next is the latest of the genre DarkStar One, which is very basic and very disapointing, gets boring too quicky.

Or Xwing series (which are probably the best), but very dated now.

And erm thats about it.

Edit: Oh EVE is I guess too, but its a subsicrption mmprpg. And not "trigger" flying, its point and click. Good game by all accounts, but I couldn't get into it

X-Wing alliance is still awsome nowadays (suprised they havent released a new one since then on modern hardware  ).

Darkstar one is excellent as one of the modern options so as above really!

You didn't mention Freespace 2. If you haven't played it, go go go! Still looks great even today. Probably has one of the best storylines too - something greatly lacking in recent games.

Darkstar One was a let down. Demo makes you go "WOW!"

Actual game just feels like the demo copied and pasted a dozen times!

X3 you need patience and a desire to manage trade, money and a fleet of ships across the galaxy. From experience it is not a game you can just pick up and casually play.

Freelancer is a good game. Story is pretty good and is quite action-packed until you finish the story, after that its just a multitude of randomly generated missions which basically consist of "Go here, kill him, take that, bring it here".

There was one awsome space game but I cant remember what it was!! It started with a lower case "i" if I remember correctly? You had to collect resources like in X3 and your main base was in a gas cloud? Really good physics in it

i-war 2 (or Independence War 2: Edge of Chaos to be precise :p )

Yeah, pretty good game and very realistic flight physics.

There are no decent space shooters as yet. EvE is a stopgap as it has no true combat, and Darkstar one is a joke.

Isnt there a free Babylon5 based one knocking about?

there is a TC for freespace 2. Freespace 2 is now freeware I believe, which is handy because its also probably the best space shooter ever made imo.

Yeah it's called "I've Found Her". If you're expecting to fly a Whitestar about you'll be disappointed: you play as a Starfury pilot, and it's frighteningly difficult because they made the handling as realistic as they thought they could get away with (whereas in fact they could get away with less:p). Just to give you an idea, they've put in proper 0-G physics, so if you want to come to a standstill you dont just hit the "brakes" (no such thing), but you actually have to throttle backwards, and you can also fly in one direction but be facing (and firing) a different one. Stupidly difficult, but not in a frustrating way, cause you can tell it has depth and it's worth learning how to play it because it probably IS the closest you can come to real space combat in our lifetimes!:D

sounds pimpin

The sarcasm is strong in this one! :p

For a free game developed by fans it's amazingly detailed. I couldn't get into it because I was playing about 4 games simultaneously back then but if you're looking for a good deep flight-sim-stype game you can't get a better one for that kind of money (ie. no money:p)

Not on my PC at the mo so I can't give filenames but a while back I remember downloading a few.

There's Privateer1.0 or something like that, it's a remake of Priv2

IFH (the babylon5 thing) is available here: http://gamefiles.blueyonder.co.uk/blueyondergames/b5ifh/

...and there's one other free one I've forgotten.

I loved FS2 and wouldn't might checking out FS or I-War2 sometime. PLayed the demo of the original I-War and I think I found it a bit complex.

I-war2 was a lot of fun... the physics take a bit of getting used to but once you do you can pull off some seriously fun moves (like spinning your ship around and nailing the guy tailing with you whilst still moving in the original direction).

well after reading this, im downloaded the babalon 5 one right now. Hope it still works lol

Used to have a babylon 5 mod for freelancer but had loads of bugs

had a star wars one as well, was fun to fly Tie fighters lol
