I still own a early 2011 MBP, it's great for what I need it for. I've decided that I'd like to upgrade to an SSD.

Which one is best for my model? Currently it has the standard 500GB HDD, I was thinking of purchasing a 250gb and cloning everything over using a program called Superduper? Is this even possible? Currently I have only 160gb used of the 500gb.

If anyone can advise, I'd appreciate it.

Ive personally gone for a Crucial M4 512Gb one in my 2011 MBP, and used a Crucial M500 in the Mrs' Macbook.

Cant fault them.

I would consider using Carbon Copy Cloner instead of SuperDuper at the moment, especially as CCC also clones the Recovery Partition and has official support for Mavericks.

Yes Carbon Copy Cloner is a good piece of software, I used it to clone my MBP 750 to a Seagate SSHD 1tb, the best part of it was I had a kernel panic 3 quarters of the way into copying 600gb of data over , I restarted the laptop and it just picked up from where it left off, Also you get a trial and as the poster said it copies the recovery partition.

I put a Samsung 830 in my mid 2010 a couple days ago and I haven't noticed any discernable difference in performance at all. Underwhelmed to say the least. Maybe if it had SATA 3 it would be more noticeable.

IIRC it does have SATA 3. When i purchased my MBP 2012 (MID) last year i swapped out the HDD straight away. initial boot was around 25 seconds or so. after installing the SSD its now under 9 seconds.

In regards to the OP, I would also recommend Samsung SSD's. Not sure what the EVO is like but the 830, from grit hand results its excellent.

Macbook pro 2011 SSD?

Hi guys I would like a 512gb ssd to fit into my mbp early 2011. I haven't used it much over the years but it saves me getting a new one as it is good spec. I did post last time on what needs to be done but can't find the thread.

Can anyone recommend a good ssd and also a way to transgression everything from my current hdd to that?

I relaced the 750GB HDD in my 2011 MBP with a Crucial 1TB SSD and use CarbonCopy to back up to the original HDD connected via Thunderbolt connected SATA.

Works very well and I'm in no hurry to change.

Strange, I swapped my 2010 MBP HDD for a 250gb SSD and its significantly better. :)

*edit, ah, old post revival. :)

Just to update, I got a Crucial 750gb limited edition mx300 SSD from the bay at a decent price. Installed it and wow what a difference, while I was at it I upgraded from 8gb to 16gb.

It really has made my mbp, brilliantly quick. Unfortunately, the seller only had 1 left. If he had 2 RAID 0 would have been an option! Thanks again guys.

I have a 2011 MBP i went with the Crucial 960gb a while back, awesome upgrade. been rock solid for a couple of years now.

never updated the firmware on it just put it in transferred back via timemachine good to go

Weird this thread just appeared as I have just bought a 850 EVO 250GB for my eary 2011 Macbook Pro. I upgraded to 16GB ram a couple of years ago but am hoping this SSD will make it a bit snappier. Just a shame you can't upgrade the screen to retina :)

Just gave it a clean too and it looks like new!

Krisali an SSD does make a heck of a difference. Before boot time would take 1 minute 15 seconds. Now it's 10 seconds. Not sure why I didn't upgrade earlier.
