Good system for £1200

Hi there,

In the near future wanting to make a good future(ish) proof machine. Budget around the 1200 quid mark.

So far, looking at this sort of thing. Opinions/changes you'd make?

I have an existing case, Antec 1200 gaming case. Also already have harddrives and ssd's.

Please don't slate me if some of these parts are bad choices, it's been over six years since I last build a system. It's time for an upgrade so if you can suggest improvements for my money to get the best setup, I'd really appreciate it.

Is this a gaming PC? If so, you'll be better off with a 4770k and a Z87 motherboard.

Will you be overclocking?

They're pretty similar. Both are quad-core, hyperthreaded, and unlocked. The real benefits of the 4820k come from the X79 platform, but they're essentially only relevant if you're using a ton of RAM and/or three or four GPUs. Problem is, X79 motherboards are much more expensive. You can get a quality Z87 board for £200 less than the ASUS one you linked - money that can be better spent elsewhere on a gaming PC.

Thanks man, really appreciate the help. I'll re-adjust the linked items shortly. Anything else you think could be improved? Is my RAM choice ok? I thought maybe: Asus SABERTOOTH Mobo looks ok, much much less money. Would that still be good (linked in original post)?

The Sabretooth board is expensive for what it is. You're paying extra for the thermal armour stuff, which doesn't seem to add much beyond aesthetics.

This is a bit over budget, but you get two 290s:

The TeamGroup RAM is good value. The Avexir stuff has tighter timings, but RAM doesn't affect performance much anyway. You don't need more than 8gb for gaming.

Wow there is a spec! I've never crossfired cards before,I take if the crossfire between 2x 290's would give me some serious gaming power? Thanks a lot man, this is a good build for me to consider. Love it
 
That's a good point actually. I'll have to try find out, but think you might be right. Would the single fan version be more likely to fit?

Thats a K2 and a gfx card in a OC board, I haven't even fitted the fans and wire clips in that pic and its already a rizzla width away from touching.
 
Thats a shame :( The K2 is good value as well for the performance.
What about using the 2nd and 3rd pci-e slots ? I know it would only run at x8/x4 but it shouldn't affect performance that much over x8/x8 ? Maybe a couple of FPS ?

Failing that then a H80i might be a better option.
 
An H80i should fit in the rear top fan mount.

In fact looking around online suggests the Antec 1200 can take around a 10.5" card, the two Tri-X cards I have here are 12"

Easier to change the case.

Yeh I remember when I bought the case was like 5 years or more ago. Thanks for the heads up guys. I could have had a worry on if I'd not got some help :P — definitely going to look at a new case. Do you guys know of any other spacious cases that would fit my needs for now + crossfire in the future? Although I am judging this case on looks, when its probably a really good airy case.
