So what do you think, is it a good time for gaming on consoles...

I've had so much fun over the last 6 months getting back into the console market, I've not really been into it since I had my Dreamcast the PC sort of took over all my time and killed my enthusiasum on consoles due to the shere scale of the games with the online capabilities. Know it looks like there hitting back in a big way and personally I can't see me going back to playing games on my PC again for verious reasons.

What are your views on this and the future of gaming on consoles?

It's a great time for console gaming, I've packed in PC gaming for good I think, and will be getting rid of my Windows based PC as soon as I can and picking up a Mac for Surfing and Media Playing.

Online gaming has changed things big time for consoles, but not only that, With the Introduction of HDTV's things have got better and look prettier too ;)

Be nice if Sega could get back into the swing of things and bring out another console though :D

I don't think it's an especially good time..there are just as many good games and bad games as there always have been. There are, however, lots more disappointments; amazing looking screen shots & spectacular videos do not always equal a good game and we've been finding that out a lot lately. Grade-A games are still quite rare.

Tend to agree with you on sega bringing out a console, but I don't think thats going to happen tbh.. They have no credability and they hav'nt got the backing though we could see something bold like google creating a console they compete with microsoft at most over levels. I only hope that sony's console does'nt become the next dreamcast..

I think that given that we now have 3 strong contenders, two mainly in the hardware and extra's, and one in the gameplay/innovation it's certainly a more interesting time for gamers than it has been at times in the past.

I can't see the PS3 going out like the Dreamcast did, it has plenty 'due out' on it, and sales are doing particularly well since early November when the 40gb version arrived - The PS3 got off to a very very worrying start but its doing nicely now.

I do think that Microsoft need to rethink their strategy though, sure the Xbox is a fantastic machine and has a shedload of quality titles out right now, but what does the future hold? They have said they won't be releasing any new hardware for a good few years yet. (rumour has it 2011 at least) They have recently lost a bunch of what could be described as their 'best' studio's (Bungie, Bioware, Bizarre, FASA and not sure whats going on with Rare) and don't seem to have many secured exclusives out over the next few years. Just makes me wonder what Microsofts long term plan is?

All of this can only mean good things for PS3 owners, they will now be getting games they never would have got if MS would have kept hold of these developers.

EA seem to be hinting at bringing out some hardware, Imagine if they made some kind of deal with Microsoft and made the new Xbox together, I think that would pretty much destroy Sony.

I'm not sure what the future holds, but it's going to be interesting to find out, I sincerely hope that nobody goes out like the Dreamcast though.

The thing is they've not really lost Bungie or Bioware, Bizarre was never really theres and the FASA boys have just gone to existing MGS teams.

MS aren't stupid and they'll have plenty up their sleeve for next year. Fable 2, Gears of War 2, Alan Wake, a big title or two from Rare, and there will be a few big surprises we know nothing about. Cry On will be the next big thing from Mistwalker once Lost Odyssey ships in Feb and the ultra secret Project Offset will be huge when it hits.

Ms haven't disappointed in 2007 and I see no reason why 2008/2009 should be any different.

In my opinion the last couple of years have been the best for all round gaming, and this autumn/winter is providing the strongest line up of games I've ever seen.

I don't think there's ever been a better time to be a gamer. There's a good variety in the consoles available (both home and portable) and there's a huge selection of great games available.

Hell, even EA have got their act together. :)

Was just talking to Chris1712 off here today over brunch and I said I reckon this is the best gaming's ever been, definitely the new golden age (the last one being ps1/n64 awesomeness).

I don't think there have been so many excellent games in such a short space of time.

I certainly think this is an excellent time for console gaming.

Maybe not quite the best ever time for gaming (for me, that will always be the days of the Spectrum and then Amiga, when everything was shiny and new!) but certainly, very very good whatever console you own.

I'm quite heartened to hear that MS probably won't be releasing anymore hardware until 2011 ish, assuming the rumours have some truth in them. I always felt they got rid of the original xbox a little early as I think it was just getting into it's stride as games like Fable, Forza and Black came out very late in it's life.

Just because a game isnt grade A, doesnt mean it should be wiped off the market. Some games that are coming out now will purely appeal to their respective markets and theres a lot of 'sub-competition' like in the fps market. Theres so many good games coming out for pretty much every genre, so all gamers should be happy.

As for MS not having something for 2008, what a load of balogney, theres too many titles to list. I think some people are forgetting the importance of GTA having a simultaneous release on the ps3 and the 360.

Its been stated clearly by MS that their priority now is to leave 2008 games to 2008 and concentrate on this winter, rather than just 'promise' gamers that good games are coming, like some companies do.

Its been a great year for console gaming, just imagine if games had hit there release dates , GTA4 in October, Super Smash brothers/ mario kart before Xmas, Littlebigplanet, MGS4 etc. If these had hit I for one think it would be the greatest year in gaming i can remember (and i can remember when marquee was cool lol). If games keep to there release schedule, and a few others come out next year i think 2008 will be a better year than this. For example just some of the games next year could bring,

Infamous
Devil may cry 4
Soul calibur 4
Tekken 6
Afrika
LittleBigPlanet
MGS4 and MGSonline
White Knight Story
RFOM 2
Motorstorm 2
GTA 4
Hard rain
The Agency
Final Fantasy 13
FF versus 13
God of War 3 ( pretty please)
GT5 prologue
GT 5 full
Gears of war 2
Alan wake
NGS2
Fable 2
Mario kart
Super Smash brothers Melee

Most of these have AAA potential in sales and ratings and there just the ones I can remember!

Hmmm, no. Far from it. This was a period of EZ sequels, dying consoles, arrogant developers, first party incompetence, cheap knockoffs and endless license cashcows.

It's trying to be the PS1 era with prettier, shinier graphics. I'm not buying any of it, metaphorically.

Wha, the PS1 era was full of poor quick cash in games.

Its a great time at the minute on 360, and next year is going to spectacular on PS3.

Also some excellent games coming out for 360 in 2008 aswell.

This year has been very good for games and next year will be even better, never a better time to be a multi console owner, best of all worlds.
