Good Time for Console Gaming?

Lost interest in consoles really after Final Fantasy VII on the PSone. Just bought an xbox 360 this week and absolutely loving it. Beginning to wonder why I was so blinkered in the past :)

Hmmm, no. Far from it. This was a period of EZ sequels, dying consoles, arrogant developers, first party incompetence, cheap knockoffs and endless license cashcows.

What category do Bioshock, Assassin's Creed and Mass Effect fall into?

All they need to do is release SWOS and it'll be the best gaming period ever. :p

It's a fantastic time for consoles. you can't help but feel a crash is coming. With massive development costs and over saturation of AAA titles a few studios are gonna get their fingers burned. The peak is now, but it's going to have to slow down soon. When you have Halo 3, AC, COD4 all released so close together how do the "normal" titles get sold? I think 2009 will see a significant drop in the quality of titles.

Wait wait

One's an FPS that is well recieved but seems to be panned by just about everyone on here, one's an average game that scores 7/10 in half of its reviews and the other's not even out yet.

Wha, the PS1 era was full of poor quick cash in games.

It's nowhere near as bad as it is today. We're having movie tie-in games thrown in with nearly every Hollywood movie release. Back then, you'd only see movie games for the biggest films.

Today's games are being funded towards graphics, instead of gameplay. The PS1 knew it couldn't really compete with the N64 or the PC platform, so developers tried their best on the gameplay front. What with millions being spent on graphics alone, I would imagine some smaller developers are going to struggle in today's climes. For every decent game out today, you have ten shallow derivative games that focuses almost entirely on shiny graphics.

I wouldn't say having two major consoles out with hardly any good games out for them (PS3 and Wii) and another console saturated with FPS's and a dying rate of 33% makes for a good time in console gaming.

im finding myself playing on my 360 as much as I played on my n64.

Definately good to be back in gaming. This year started pretty slow though, its easy to forget that now mind.

My god man; it's like a stuck record. MS have tried there best to put the failure rate right and of all the people who have seen their console die I don't see any of them saying it's spoiled the gaming year.

Saturated with fps titles? Like the award winning Crackdown? Dead Rising, Blue Dragon, Mass Effect, Viva Pinata, Saints Row, Eternal Sonata, PRG4, Forza 2, Virtua Fighter 5, Test Drive Unlimited, Splinter Cell etc.

I'm currently playing through Eternal Sonata and I have Assassins Creed, COD4 and the Orange Box sat in my rental queue and I'm desperate to play all of them. I've Mass Effect on preorder and that's my most anticipated game of the year. I've never seen this many 'absolute must have' titles released at the same time; this really is a fantastic time to be a gamer.

I've had so much fun over the last 6 months getting back into the console market, I've not really been into it since I had my Dreamcast the PC sort of took over all my time and killed my enthusiasum on consoles due to the shere scale of the games with the online capabilities. Know it looks like there hitting back in a big way and personally I can't see me going back to playing games on my PC again for verious reasons.

What are your views on this and the future of gaming on consoles?

nah, get back to your PC and fire up ET :)

having said that COD4 is damn good fun :)

LIST WARZ

You win, I guess I really want to play on my 360 now ! Or not...

Thinking of putting all 3 consoles on the marketplace, they really don't do anything for me anymore, and none of the developers want to budge from their sequelitis or generic forumalae.

Gaming has never been so strong on consoles. I don't know what I'd have done these last 2 years without the Xbox360 tbh.

i reckon you might just have survived.

this generation has really got me back into consoles, the 360 in particular has been top draw and after never imagining i'd go back to console gaming after the nadir that was for me the last generation (the gc had some class games but i didn't fall in love with it really). this one has really taken me back to the high points of my gaming days with my snes/megadrive through to my ps1/n64. i mean sure a lot has changed; fps does largely seem to be king, production values are far higher, you're far more aware of disappointments and flaws in games, but this generation has brought the fun factor back. the 360 is way out there in front in terms of quality titles at the moment, but nintendo is starting to get some of it's first party system sellers on the go and developers are starting to get used to the control system and the ps3 while it's disappointed me a bit so far should start to get some real quality going in the first couple of quarters of next year.

As a long time pc gamer, I saw this coming when I read about MS's plans for the 360. I ditched my lovely keyboard+ratter and moved over the dreaded consoles, and I HATED consoles prior to moving.

It's a decision I've never regretted as I play heaps of games now whereas on the PC it was either a dated RTS or yet another 'FPS of the month', and that was generally about it.

Is it a good time? With GTA4, Saints Row 2, Condemned 2, Mass Effect, and many more to come I'd say yes. I'm still on my launch day 360 so I've got no complaints.
