I won't lie, I'm not a huge PC gamer anymore, spend all day at a desk anyway so it's not my go to after work. I do have the occasional dip into it still so like something capable. The combination of 6600k oc'd and RX480 do me pretty well, if it weren't for Windows 10 being wound up.

As tempted as I am, it's got to be close to 8-9 years now since I built this one, and although I'm on the fence about changing OS, it's probably time either way.

What would you consider a decent step forward on this front, not really got budgets in mind yet, don't mine pre-owned stuff (especially this time of year), thinking bracket wise £250-300, £400-600 for my use these days.

Keep getting tempted chucking money at water-cooling too for the hell of it, even though it's aesthetic, so older gen is probably the best idea there given I've not done that before.

Don't bother with water cooling unless you fancy a cheap all in one cooler but your better off putting the money into strong components.

Spending wise there's lots of options it's wether you go latest tech such as AM5 or previous gen which saves a bit of money,. Used not a fan personally unless you go members market or somewhere that offers warranty .

Example of build .

AM4.
CPU 5600 £90
Memory 32gb 3200/3600 MHz £50
Motherboard b550;£80 to £100
Case £40
PSU 650w to 750w £70 for a decent unit but there are budget options
M2 drive 1tb £50
GPU rx6600 £180. Capable 1080p gaming.

AM5 build gonna cost you an additional £100 for a 7600 CPU b650 mobo and ddr5 but this has onboard graphics which you could add a GPU at anytime or reuse your 480 for both if funds are tight you can also source a 7500f CPU from china for £130 if you don't mind that option.

It's where you want to fall in terms of budget .

I wouldnt go am4 personally, and I didnt.

AM5 will give you an upgrade path if you decide later you want one. What I did;

7600
32gb 6000 c30 mem
b650 eagle

If your not gaming you could stick with the 480 youve got an keep an eye out on a bargain gpu later in the year, the new 5* and 9* series are coming soon so you might be able to pick up a cheap open box 3060/70 or something, keep an eye on bgrade stuff

Looks for things you can keep too, your case and PSU are probably fine again if youve got a decent m.2 already, reuse it, can always swap it out later on

This will give you a solid base to work from to add things to as you find some deals

Consider a used AMD 5700X CPU, new AMD B550 motherboard, new Intel B580 and a new 650watt or 750watt PSU as a good upgrade option.

The intel GPU will give you all the latest codec support which is nice and it's incredible value for the performance.

Watercooling isn't worth it anymore.

Edit: AM5 is worth the extra cost IMO as the platform will be supported for a while yet. Yes, it's more expensive but it's not that much more.

Are you still happy with the performance? If you are, might as well save some money :)
You still have a few more months of W10, and when support runs out, you can just go ahead and install Win 11 using Rufus to bypass the CPU restrictions

I've been tempted but it is starting to creak a little, hmm worth giving a go though I suppose first. I'm used to an i7 ultra during the day which is what's made me realise it's starting to chug now

Sometimes all it takes is a fresh windows (re)install

It has crossed my mind I'm on air with it overclocked at the moment, you've got me thinking... get an aio on it and give it a bit of a push. It does the games I generally play as well. I like your reasoning.

Edit - I may give it a bash for the fun of it anyways now

Microsoft just reduced the spec requirements for Win 11 so you can just install it.

Do a clean install instead of an upgrade - you can just use your Win 10 key to activate Win 11.

A clean install is always a good idea for an old system.

What's the most demanding task your planning to do as this is a good indication on where to go in terms of upgrading as @tamzzy mentioned a fresh install often breaths new life into it.

In fairness not a huge amount, gaming wise I love my older stuff anyway and I can run most things I want at a good res now for the pc gaming I do.

From a raw processing point of view, 3D printing stuff, slicing, bit of modelling (eventually), mess with large GB sets of zip files periodically too.

what are the other specs of your current computer? there may be parts you can upgrade that you can take along to a new pc (eg cooler/ssd etc)

i go with this, you would be set for a good few years, and have massive future upgrade options

Just in the process of working out an upgrade from the same platform.
Last few builds cost 6-700 but this time I'm looking at about £1000-1100 I think.

Currently planning an r5 7600 and a 7800xt though I may stick with the rx480 till we see what's going on with the new generation.
Probably overkill for how much I actually game, I also work at my home desk in the daytime so not always the nicest place to spend free time but theres a few new games I want to run properly!

I have separate work and leisure machines, spent a bomb on a monitor during the pandemic then decided to stop using it for work and bought another so it sits not getting much use, which I'd like to change. I'll be sticking with that 480 at the moment which I've settled on (for now...)

Mobo availability seems poor right now, I had something about £180 in the basket but it's now out of stock....

if you look in B-Grade you can find some good items and if you email customer service you can make offers on the items.

i have this board, its solid and some nice features and look good in a case, the offer i made was £120.
