Selling off my old X2 4200 which has served me well and to be honest still does! Hasn't skipped a beat but want to upgrade so looking at new processors.

Deciding to go the intel route for the first time in years so wondering if quad core is worth it? Should I go for the Q6600 and will it make a noticeable difference?

if you want you electricity bill to go up

get a q6600

if you want a nice - cool running overclockable quad thats energy efficiant
its the q9550 for you

for blistering games performance - an E8500

put any of those chips in a P35 /P45 /X38 /X48 board and you will have a good platform

unless your budget extends to i7... then thats a whole other story

Unfortunately dont have a huge budget. Gaming is a big part of what I use the PC for but it's not everything nowadays.

Would a Q6600 G0 version still use up loads of power?! Didnt think it would be that bad! The Q9550 is out of my price range unfortunately.

Why is everyone harking about the cost of power and such a small amount of that for something that they enjoy? It's a bit like going fishing with no bait because the worms are too expensive.

And how much more power? 18w idle and 34w under full load

http://www.hardwarezone.com/articles/view.php?cid=2&id=2521&pg=11

so even if its under full laod 24 hours a day, a q6600 will comsume 297kw per annum more (worse case scenario) so about £30 at 10 pence per kw (another worse case example)

In reall life the savings are perhaps a fiver per year.

Really justifies the extra £100+

Pick up a cheap 2nd q6600 for under £100. The older ones clock better as well. That's what I did when I upgraded from my 4200+ x2. Through in a p35 board if your on a budget or a p45 if you can afford it and your sorted. Memory is cheap as chips now.

EDIT: And another thing the Q6600 only consumes 6w more power than his AMD so hardly going to increase his electric bill

Lol, i had pretty much the same comments when i asked about a CPU, seems everyone now is really bother about the planet or something.

If it's a socket 939 X2 you're selling off I'd be very interested in taking it off your hands? Am looking for a cheap upgrade, currently running a single core 4000+ at 2.8ghz, it's woeful.

No access to MM :(

PM if interested, thanks!

Yeah its a socket 939 version. It's not up for sale yet and wont be until next month as dont have the spare cash as yet. Check on the auction site although for some reason people seem to spend silly money on them! Just noticed that the Q6600 have gone up in price! They were down around the £120 mark last time I looked :( Thats the opposite of what I expected when I left it a bit longer lol!

Yeah I'd be tempted myself to put it on there, they go for so much money! Every1 looking for a cheap upgrade for a rare and dying breed of pc's. Will keep my eyes peeled.

Cheers anyway.

Why not stick with AMD?

No-one ever seems to recommend the Phenom, I like it. It's only ever the blooming Q6600 which seems to crop up.

In your situation I would purchase

  • E5200 Processor
  • P45/P43/G45/G43 Chipset mobo
  • 2GB (2x1GB)/4GB (2x2GB) DDR2 memory (PC2-6400/DDR2-800/400MHz - PC2-8500/DDR2-1066/533MHz)

and then sell your

  • Socket 939 Dual Core CPU
  • Socket 939 Mobo
  • DDR Ram

If you do it properly you will end up with a much faster computer and £20 in the back burner! :D

Socket 939 kit has been fetching good money at auction, just a matter of taking some nice pics, little description etc and you should be good! Prices will tumble at some point so don't delay!

Lol. I see your inner sales man bursting out in your last post :D Looking to sell next month after pay day so watch this space! Really need to get on the DDR2 bandwagon before DDR becomes obsolete completey and worthless. Was quite suprised it was still worth something at all!
