I currently have an msi 270x , use to have 2 but had to return one due to a faulty fan , and now I found myself missing the grunt of the 2 cards so I've just purchased an unused 290x , and after I've sold my card I'm looking at roughly £70 for the upgrade , have I made the right move, as I know it's an old card now but I do only game at 1080p , I mainly wanted more grunt for ark as it doesn't run well on my current one :(

Ideally I would like a new setup but in the middle of buying a house , priorities and all that :)

290X is a very good upgrade from a single 270x imo. 290X will offer very similar performance to 270X crossfire too. But just much more consistent performance without relying on crossfire profiles and better minimums.

Just keep in mind ark does not run well on pretty much anything at the moment, even a Titan X struggles. Best to wait until the game is completed before judging any cards performance on it.

What's your CPU.

If the op had no problem running 270X in crossfire which on average is about as fast as a 290X, things should be simpler for the CPU and more consistent with one card.

Yeah I've heard that it was a bit dodgy but even for other games such as battlefield hardline etc I've had to reduce the settings quite a lot to get playable frames .. I have a pretty old setup which is another reason why I didn't want to blow a load of money on a gpu when I'll be looking to get Atleast a 1440p setup in a couple of years ! I have an i7 930 oc to 4.01 ghz which still seems to do pretty well for me , only use it for gaming
