Good video capture software

For what purpose, recording what you see on your PC screen?

You could start by looking at something like FRAPS which I believe has a free version. http://www.fraps.com/download.php Or perhaps CamStudio which has a 30 day free trial.

Edit: Could try this one too: http://www.dvdvideosoft.com/products/dvd/free-screen-video-recorder.htm

To be honest, I just googled "Free video capture software" seems to be plenty to choose from. I have used FRAPS myself, long time ago now and if I remember rightly the free version watermarks the output.

Ah, that's a little different. I doubt my suggestions will help with that as I said, they were for capturing what you see on your PC screen. I can't really help you I'm afraid.

What format are your original old movies in? Cine/8mm/VHS etc etc?

Give the forum the most information you can and I'm sure someone will be along to help you out.

If you can watch them on the computer, fraps or camtasia would be very good options. Although the free version of fraps does have a watermark as Vintage said, but I'm sure camtasia offers a free trial with no watermark and very simple to setup!
